5 Essential Things You Should Know Before Hiring a Scissor Lift

If you have an ongoing project or are even looking to start or complete a project that involves heights, scissor lift hire could be your best choice. This invaluable machine is not the kind you can just find in every construction site or owned by every constructor.

But before going ahead and rent the scissor lift, you probably want to know some of the things below:

There are Different Types of Scissor Lifts

Before going for the scissor lift hire, it is important to know that there are multiple different types of scissor lifts, primarily five:

  • Hydraulic Scissor Lifts

These are scissor lifts that can be used both indoors and outdoors. Some of them use electric motors while others use compressed air. You will mostly find this type of plant in warehouses, infrastructure projects, construction sites, and such.

  • Diesel Scissor Lifts

Just like the name suggests, these are powered by diesel fuel. They are loud and noisy and are best used for outdoor constructions. This is because they need spade and ventilation, so the noise and the fumes omitted wouldn’t be destruction to other workers and activities.

  • Electric Scissor Lifts

Electric Scissor Lifts are powered by electric batteries. Unlike diesel scissor lifts, these are not noisy nor do they emit any fumes. They are also less bulky and smaller, making them ideal to be used in indoor construction projects and narrower spaces.

  • Rough Terrain Scissor Lifts

These are some of the most popular types of scissor lifts. They have an amplified power to increase performance and productivity, especially for outdoor construction projects. Their engines are internal combustion, which can use gas, petrol, or diesel.

  • Pneumatic Scissor Lifts

These operate on air and do not need any kind of electrics and hydraulics. They are clean and maintenance-free, virtually. For pneumatic Scissor lift to function, an operator is required to control, and there has to be a shop air available.

The Documents you Need to Operate the Scissor Lift

While you don’t need the regular license a scissor lift owner/ company holds, you definitely would need a document/ paperwork that permits you to operate it. This could be an EWP Operator Ticket, also called a Yellow Card, or you can also first obtain a High-Risk Work License. EWP is for height below 11m, while the latter is for height above.

What a Scissor Lift can do

The first thing you need to know is that there are different types of scissor lifts, all of which have different capabilities as far as performance, capacities, capabilities, and functionality. You also need to know that there are types of scissor lifts that are the best ideal for indoor projects while others are the best ideal for outdoor projects.

The operational mechanism also comes to play as far as what the scissor lift can do. Some use electricity, others traditional batteries and diesel, which are noisy and emit dangerous fumes. Others reach different heights. Make sure you understand the types of scissor lifts, your requirements, and decide which one can best do the job for you.

How to Choose a Scissor Lift

Scissor lift hire, requires some considerations to be made before signing the contract or hiring the machine. Before hiring one, you first need to assess the site location, or where you will be working with the machine; would it be an indoor job or an outdoor job?

You also need to think about the emissions and the airflow of the site. Are you going to need rough terrain? How about the height, how high will you need to go? The usage frequency and the load/ the amount of weight I;e people or equipment that would be lifted are also some of the things to consider.
