Some of them are harmless and don’t actually affect a women’s lifestyle while others can be quite dangerous. However, it is important to distinguish between truth and falsehood, especially when it comes to health. In this article, we gathered six debunked myths about periods you should stop believing in.
1. Periods don’t hurt
It is a common myth that women pretend that their periods are painful in order to avoid activities. But the reality is that pain during periods is real and may be caused by certain underlying conditions. There is even medical term dysmenorrhea that determines painful cramps that affect women during menstruation.
Primary dysmenorrhea can be eliminated with the help of OTC painkillers, heating pad, and mild physical activity. Secondary dysmenorrhea requires medical attention due to certain diseases that affect a woman’s reproductive system.
2. Sex during menstruation is a nonsense
Many women tend to refuse sex during periods due to blood and painful sensations. Of course, if menstrual cramps are unbearable, being in the mood to have sex is quite difficult. However, if the pain is mild and you are excited, there is no need to avoid intercourse. Take a shower, lay a towel on your sheets, and enjoy your sex life as you usually do.
You should also know that orgasm can significantly reduce pain during periods. The reality is that orgasm boosts the production of endorphins that act as natural painkillers. Moreover, these chemicals will improve your mood that is usually not so good during menstruation.
3. You can’t take a bath during periods
There is a common misconception that a woman shouldn’t take a bath or swim in the pool during menstruation because dirty water can penetrate the uterus and infect it. But water can’t infect the uterus because of three reasons:
- Water can get only into the vagina near the opening
- The cervix wouldn’t let water further
- Periods are not a wound that can be infected
Moreover, taking a warm bath can be quite beneficial because it relaxes and relieves menstrual cramps at the same time.
4. You shouldn’t exercise during menstruation
If you are regularly exercising, there is no need to interrupt your workouts due to periods. You should know that exercising can also contribute to endorphins production. As we mentioned before, these “feel-good” chemicals ease menstrual cramps and relieve pain. You can perform mild exercising like light cardio, aerobics, yoga, and Pilates. However, it is better to refuse hard and exhausting exercises before the end of menstruation.
5. Tampons can cause many diseases
Another popular and baseless myth is that the regular use of tampons can contribute to many infections and diseases. This can be true only if you forget the tampon inside for many days. But even in this case, the consequenced are not so dramatic and can be easily treated. Tampons are made of soft and hypoallergenic material that can’t cause infection or inflammation itself.
6. A lack of menstruation always means pregnancy
Ther are a few reasons why your periods didn’t occur in time. Except for pregnancy, the most common of them are:
- Excessive physical exertion
- Changes in nutrition
- Weight fluctuations
If your periods delayed for a few days due to some of these reasons, there is no need to panic. However, you should also know that irregular periods can be a sign of certain underlying diseases. That’s why it is recommended to visit your gynecologist if your periods are constantly late.
