Coin Questions: How Do You Design a Coin?

You want to design a coin, but you have no idea where to begin.

This is an issue that many people who want to design their own challenge coins face. However, designing a coin is much easier than you might think. You don’t need to be artistic; you simply need a desire and an idea.

Challenge coins are fun to create, distribute, and collect. Today, they are easier to make than ever before.

Read on to learn the simple steps that you’ll need to follow to design and create a challenge coin of your very own.

1. Idea Generation

The first step and perhaps most important step when it comes to knowing how to design a challenging coin is to come up with an idea.

Perhaps you already have an idea in mind, but if you don’t have one yet, start brainstorming.

Who will receive your coins? Will they be distributed at a particular event? Are there any specific colors you would like to use in your design?

When you design a coin, it can be anything you want it to be. Some people focus on a slogan or a mascot but don’t feel limited by what other people do. When it comes to designing a challenge coin, the sky is the limit!

2. Choose a Size and Shape

Once you have an idea, you need to think about the size and shape you want for your coin. Coins can be made quite small in size, but you’ll probably want to choose a larger size to make sure your image and text are clear.

Most challenge coins are round, but today, you have other options, too. Some people design challenge coins that are in a unique or custom shape, or at features like bottle openers to make them useful as well.

You’ll also want to consider the weight and texture. Most coins are three millimeters thick, but you can make them narrower or thicker if you prefer.

Do you want the face of the coin to be flat or raised? You can do either, or some combination of the two. How about the edges? You can choose from a variety of options for the texture of the edge as well.

3. Request Artwork

Once you have answered all of the above questions, you can submit this information to the design team at the challenge coin production company. These talented and experienced designers have created coins of all kinds for a wide variety of clients and events.

If you don’t like the first design, you can always work with the designers to revise it until it’s the perfect coin for you. When you’ve finally created the perfect coin, it will go into production, and soon the finished product will be in your hands to distribute as you see fit.
