The Beginnings of Supreme
The first streetwear show that Supreme ever did was in 1994 in New York City’s Soho area. From the beginning, Supreme sold more simplistic clothing like sweatshirts and hoodies. Back then the brand was concerned with attracting the skateboard community.
Eventually, the people interested in the brand went from skater to others that were into the streetwear fashion of hip hop. Supreme wanted their image to be heard through guerilla marketing for the first couple of years. Stickers were put all around New York City.
In the late 2000s, there was a spike in the demand for Supreme. This allowed the brand to open up to other locations. The popularity of Supreme shoes increased as well.
In 2014, the second location that opened was on North Fairfax Avenue in Los Angeles. This location has an indoor skate ramp and wall.
Supreme now has 11 different locations. This includes international countries in Japan and France. Supreme has been able to create collaborations with Louis Vuitton and The North Face. This is what has added so much value to the brand and makes for an expensive purchase in the resell market.
Karma and Copycat History
Maybe you thought that the Supreme logo was the brand’s original work? it might come as a surprise but it’s not! The red logo with italic bold text actually comes from inspiration from the artist Barbara Kruger.
The Supreme logo derives from a work of hers titled I shop therefore I am. This artwork was created in 1983. The brand is known for taking images of pop culture to use them for their own design purposes.
Supreme’s first branded t-shirt was a black and white picture of Rober de Niro in his film Taxi Driver. Since Supreme has used many unlicensed images they’ve had to deal with lawsuits from other companies. They’ve had cease and desist cases against them from Louis Vuitton and the NCAA.
