The World Health Organization stated in a study in 2017 that pure CBD oil is tolerable by animals and is considered overall safe. However, more studies have mentioned that there is an increased activity of alkaline phosphatase in dogs that consume CBD oil.
The benefits and applications of CBD oil are not heavily researched yet, so there is not adequate data to confirm the benefits of CBD oil for dogs.
Can You Give CBD Oil To Dogs?
Administering anything to a dog should first be consulted with their vet. CBD oil is metabolized by the liver, so owners should not simply introduce it into the diet of the dog without consulting the vet.
There is not enough research on how CBD interacts with the dog’s liver and if there are any long-term effects that can deteriorate the health of the dog.
What Does CBD Do For Dogs?
There is very little scientific data backing up the benefits of CBD oil in treating health issues in dogs. There is some anecdotal evidence from dog owners, who suggested potential benefits of CBD oil from treating pain to controlling seizures. CBT is known for having anti-inflammatory properties, which can help with heart health, nausea, appetite, anxiety, etc. Although, there is no solid research to prove this at the time.
Benefits of CBD oil for dogs
The Canine Health Foundation has been working on a study with Colorado State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine and is trying to understand the potential benefits of CBD for epileptic dogs. Not all of the benefits have been confirmed, but here are some of the observed benefits from owners:
Seizures that are caused by electric shocks in mice have been shown some success. CBD oil has reduced the frequency as compared to other medications.
Dogs suffering from painful conditions such as cancer, arthritis, and back pain can gain some benefits from using CBD oil. It can reduce inflammation and alleviate pain.
Many dogs can be anxious due to separation, and fear of confinement. There is no conclusive proof of this, but owners have noticed that administering CBD oil shows good progress in reducing anxiety.
Other potential benefits in which CBD helps dogs include appetite loss, glaucoma, depression, and sleeplessness. It is also found to be effective in treating various skin conditions.
Can My Dog Overdose On CBD?
If one is not sure, or the dog has grown up since the last time it visited the vet, one might miscalculate the amount of CBD oil that should be used. There is a chance that the dog could overdose on CBD. This is why it is important to consult the vet to determine how much CBD they should receive.
How Much CBD Oil Should I Give My Dog?
The maximum daily dose that can be administered to dogs is 5mg/kg body weight. This is the maximum amount until studies are conclusively able to prove that higher doses are also safe. However, to be on the safer side, we recommend you consult your vet.
