How to Preserve Battery Life – Things We Wish We’d Known Sooner

A low battery can affect your day; whether you wanted to take photos with friends or stay connected, a dead phone can be a safety hazard and make you miss out on memories.

What if there was a solution for this? Luckily, there is. If you want to know how to preserve battery life on your iPhone, then keep on reading for more information.

Switch to Airplane Mode

Even if you are not traveling, your iPhone is also trying to keep you connected. If you’ll be in a meeting for an extended period, or want to preserve your battery.

Airplane mode works by disenabling all incoming connections, either from WiFi, cellular data, or Bluetooth. This means that if you want your phone to last a while, you can enable airplane mode to maximize a charge if you are not going to use it.

Turn Off Background App Refresh

Background App Refresh, as the name suggests, keeps the applications on your device running and refreshing in the background even if you don’t realize it.

Not only can this suck away battery life, but it can also affect performance and the longevity of your device. To turn off Background App Fresh, go to Settings > General > Background App Refresh. From there, you can either choose what apps you do what to continue refreshing in the background or select every app to be off.

This way, you can manage what applications you allow to continue refreshing and can maximize performance and battery life.

Use Low Power Mode

Low power mode is perfect for holding charge throughout the day. With this enabled, your device automatically turns off functions like “Hey Siri,” background app refresh, automatic downloads, and more.

Since all of these peripheral features are off, your phone won’t lose out on performance, but instead will be able to hold a charge for the day. Low Power Mode is also great if you will be away from a power cord and also do not want your phone to drain while being idle.

Bluetooth Connections

Though keeping your Bluetooth enabled, similar to WiFi, will not drain your iPhone’s battery dramatically. However, the more you stream music, or your AirPods or headphones stay connected, the more likely your iPhone’s battery charge will decrease.

To keep your Bluetooth usage in check, make sure to be aware of when and where you will be using your wireless headphones or AirPods. This way, you are not using them all day and draining your iPhone.

Bonus! If your AirPods need to be reset.

Keep Your Software Up to Date

This may seem like a no brainer, but sometimes software can affect your iPhone’s battery life. If your phone seems to drain quicker than usual, try to check for any potential updates.

If you want to see if your iPhone needs updating, go to Settings > General > Software Update. From there, it should tell you if you are up to date or if there is a new update available.

Keeping your software up to date helps not only your phone’s performance, security, and longevity, but also its battery life, by making sure everything is optimized and not using power unnecessarily.

Take Advantage of Apple’s Battery Settings

Back in 2018, with the iOS 11.3 update, Apple added a nifty feature called “Battery Health Settings.” Essentially, this gives the user a mini graph with information regarding their battery health and even what applications are taking up most of their battery.

To check this out, go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health. Along there, you should see your “Maximum Capacity,” which illustrates the actual percentage of a full charge your device is receiving.

You can also optimize battery charging; that way, your iPhone adapts and learns your charging habits, and will stop charging past 80% to help preserve your battery’s cycle.

Each iPhone battery has a life cycle, so utilizing this feature is an excellent way to understand precisely what effects our iPhone’s battery the most, and how we can keep in the best shape possible for the long haul.

Offload Unused Apps

Another excellent way to preserve your battery life is to offload unused applications. Not only will this help in maintaining performance, but also in what applications are running in the background.

To enable this feature, go to Settings > Storage > Enable > Offload Unused Apps. Though this will not uninstall the application, it will assist in keeping the app in a standstill, instead of automatically updating or consuming power when you are not actively using it.

Adjust Your Screen

Your iPhone’s display is bright and beautiful; however, it can suck the battery life away. Additionally, if you have a device with True Tone, this can also use a small percentage of battery life.

Though the percentage is small, it is still a difference of 1-2% that can give you extra time. To change your brightness, swipe down from Control Center. From there, you can see the sun icon and then swipe down to adjust brightness.

To turn off true tone, go to Settings > Display & Brightness > True Tone and then toggle “off.”

Also, if you are a fan of dark mode, good news: it helps with battery life! The stealthy screen can help preserve your iPhone’s charge for the long haul.
