At some point in your life, you are going to be guilty of distracted driving. However, you will want to do all that you can to minimize the chances of distracted driving, as being distracted can lead to accidents.

Only Use Your Cell Phone For Emergencies

It is imperative that you only use your cell phone for emergencies when you are driving.

When you do have an emergency, it is a good idea to pull over before making the call. Even if you have a hands-free device, you are not 100 percent safe to talk on the phone.

Never Drive Drowsy

If you feel drowsy before you need to go somewhere, put your errand off and take some time to rest. Being drowsy on the road is a recipe for disaster. You may lose your concentration and could even fall asleep at the wheel. If you are drowsy while driving, pull off of the road and try to wake yourself up. If you still feel drowsy, call a loved one to come get you. You never want to try to drive home while you are sleepy.

Limit Your Passengers

You should limit the number of passengers in your car. Having a car full of people can distract you while you are driving and can lead to an accident. This is especially true if you are a young and less experienced driver. Driving solo or with just one other person in the car can help to decrease distraction.

Never Eat While Driving

It is a good idea not to eat while driving. Eating can lead to you being distracted. This is especially true if you spill or drop your food. Wait until you get where you are going or eat at the restaurant you got your food at.

No Multi-Tasking

When you are in your car, it may seem like a perfect time to multi-task. You may be tempted to search for music, text message, or even call your friends. Never do any of this. Focus on the road and the people around you. Make sure that you do everything you need to do before you start the car.

Taking Your Time Driving

The best thing that you can do to avoid distractions while driving is to take your time. Leave at a time that will leave you enough time to get to where you are going safely. Do not speed, and make sure that you pay attention to the road. This is especially true if the weather is bad and the roadways are slick.

Not Driving In Bad Weather

While there will be some cases where you will have to drive out in bad weather if you can avoid it, do so. Once the weather has cleared up, the roads will be safer, and there will be fewer distractions.

If you do get into an accident because you were driving while distracted, you will want to have an expert lawyer defend you. If you do not have a good lawyer, you could find yourself facing fines and possible jail time. Ensure that you find an experienced Colorado Car Accident Attorney if you have had a distracted driver accident.
