Engine Manufacturer: Chongqing Rato Technology Co., Ltd
    Engine Family: GCRPS.0805GA
    EPA Evap Family: GCRPPHHEQDDD

Rebadged by NAPA Auto (BE2000), Harbor Freight (Predator 2000) and Mi-T-M (GEN-2000-ODMO). I’m fairly certain the Powerhorse 2000 is the same as well but the case does look slightly different. Unsure on that one but the other three are obvious re-badges. There might be more out there, who knows.

Some notes from the engine manufacturer below. I suspect they make the generator windings, inverter and board as well but not 100% sure.

“RATO was founded in June, 2007 with total investment of 3.6 billion RMB, and covers an area of 460,000m2. With the philosophy of lean-manufacturing, professional general-purposed engine and All-Terrain vehicle assembly factory, key parts pressing-welding and coating factory, plastic injection and molding factory, and machining factory were built which produce 300 million units of engines and terminals, 300,000 units of motorcycles and ATVs, as well as 1,200,000 vehicle engines annually.”

    Elusive Specs??
Mi-T-M indicate that the alternator is made of brass windings. It is possible each of these rebadged versions are made to different spec but I highly doubt it. So, I suppose the alternator windings on the WEN are brass? Mi-T-M also claim THD of 3% but WEN claim “total harmonic distortion to under 0.3 percent at no load and under 1.2 percent at full load”. Perhaps an electrical engineer or similarly qualified person could chime in on the difference? Perhaps one of the manufactures are confused on their description?

    Operation
The sound on this gen is reasonable. No rattles or other annoying sounds. Photos attached on sound level from a phone app. The sound levels may or may not be accurate as it is a simple sound meter app but it gives you an idea. The sound level was recorded from 8ft away and 5ft high with the gen sitting on the ground. Pics attached: Eco Idle muffler pointing away, Eco Idle muffler facing and running 1540w/1250w load with muffler facing.

The Yamaha Sidewinder parallel cable would not fit the parallel ports on this generator. The cable bungs were slightly too large of diameter. I think others have stated the Honda cable works but I’ve never tried one. I’m not a huge fan of the bulky, cable-box style parallel kits for pairing up inverter generators. I ended up settling on the Westinghouse cable as I didn’t want to Frankenstein a cable together. Also, I like that the Westinghouse cable has the TT30 plug, two standard 20 amp plugs and could be extended with cords if desired (10ga would be safe).

Westinghouse Cable: Westinghouse WHPC Inverter Generator Parallel Cord – Compatible with Westinghoues WH2000i, WH2000iXLT, and WH2400i Inverter Generators

    Yamaha Claims of Comparison
I am unable to find any definitive proof that this motor is a “Yamaha clone” as is perpetuated in a lot of the reviews. There are some differences to note: the spark plug on this motor is the “Honda” plug. Yes, the drain/fill plug has the same thread as the Yamaha but the Yamaha holds an extra 47mL of oil in the crank case. I am unable to find bore/stroke info on the WEN/RATO motor but Yamaha indicate their displacement at 79cc in the manual but 80cc in the EPA test. WEN/RATO describe their motor as 79.7cc which aligns with the EPA test data.
Does anyone have some real proof these motors “are made in the same factory assembly line” as the Yamaha? It’s not that big a deal if it isn’t a “Yamaha clone” so long as the motor is reliable. Personally, I think it is a bit disingenuous to attach Yamaha’s name to the motor if it truly isn’t a “clone”. Same steel, crank, bearings, valves, piston, rings, etc. as the Yamaha? I’m dubious. I’d love to be proved wrong.

EPA comparison data attached. This gen seems to be very close or better than the Yamaha in all sections. I am unsure why the Yamaha is listed as “Alternative Useful Life”. These EPA tests intrigue me but I wonder how much correlation should/could be attached to longevity or reliability from the results? Maybe someone else who knows more could chime in but it seems the RATO motor is a very capable motor based on the EPA tests.

    Alternator/Inverter
No idea on the comparison to Yamaha. I was unable to find any real data on how they are built. I am unable to find Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) data in the Yamaha manual. As mentioned earlier the winding on the WEN are most likely brass. The “guts” of the inverter inside the generator are not shielded or encased in any way. Maybe that’s good? Unsure. Perhaps someone could test the Yamaha and WEN to compare? I wonder if the THD figures are different on the Ver2 of the Yamaha? Unsure.

    Conclusion
The generator appears to work great. I hit the gen with a 1540w/1250w load from eco and the gen throttled up just fine to support the load. I haven’t done any “time trials” but it ran that load for about 10 min before I switched off the heater. I’ll try to find something I can test right at 2000w/1600w at some point in the future but this heater is the closest I could get to the gen’s power rating.
Sound is very reasonable and appears in-line with manufacturer statements. There were no rattles or errant sounds from the gen, just engine/muffler hum.
Overall, first impressions are good with this gen. I have my fingers crossed with longevity but others seem to be having good luck with them. I hope that is the case for me. Compared to the more expensive Honda and Yamaha units, the hope is that I get at least 5 years of use out of this. I anticipate ~50hrs of use per season. On that calculation, I would average ~$84/year on this gen (not accounting for fuel). The Yamaha would be ~$186/yr and the Honda would be ~$200/yr. I have heard of people getting 10+ years on their Honda units. I don’t think the Yamaha has been around quite as long but the quality is certainly there on Yamaha. If this gen were to go 10 years it would be an absolute diamond in the rough. Regardless, this is a gen worth considering. Buy with confidence.

    6/14/17 – Update
Both of my units developed fuel leaks. At first, I thought the fuel leak was my fault because I overfilled or something but the other one had leaked ~1/4 of its filled tank when I checked the unit in the morning. I was very disappointed that I had an issue with leaking fuel on two different units. It is still strange they both developed the leaks within such short time from each other. Weird. Sometimes you gamble and lose. Hats off to Amazon for accommodating the returns. Amazon absolutely rocks. I bit the bullet and went with a Yamaha setup. YMMV.

Fired up yesterday for the first time and was amazed at how quiet it ran. Plugged into our trailer and ran at about 50% load with air conditioning. Eco mode adjusted the running level and noise accordingly. Neighbor came over to tell me how surprised he was at how quiet it was compared to others he has seen/heard! Easy to lift. Also bought the magnetic dipstick.

Good features, better than the Honda 2000 I had. Just as quiet as Honda. Very satisfied….so much so that I bought two and have the parallel kit. Now I have plenty of power and each individual unit is so much easier to carry than a single 3000 inverter.

I purchased a new camper that has a microwave oven. Unfortunately, my little Yamaha was too small to work the oven so I needed at least 2200 Watts. After considerable research, I decided to go with the WEN. I really didn’t want to spend a ton of money for a higher wattage Yamaha. I’ve had ZERO issues with this generator. Its actually not much heavier than the 1100 Yamaha I had. It’s just as quiet and it starts on the first pull! If you don’t need full power it has an “echo” setting and it will run for a very long time. I recently did a winter camping trip and the temp fell as low as 16 deg F or more, the generator sat outside sheltered by the camper. The next morning I went to start it, first pull, bingo! She started right up! I just don’t see how you can go wrong to use this as an RV generator and in addition to the microwave, I also ran an electric heater too without any issues. If you want to keep the gen looking good, don’t toss the box and air bubble liner, use it to store and transport the gen. Cut small openings near the top of the box on the ends to insert your hands to carry it. Overall, I am very satisfied to have purchased this generator at a bargain deal! Also, another thing that sold me was talking to friends who owned other WEN tools/equipment and were very satisfied with the quality.

I recently upgraded to a camper with a microwave oven, requiring a more powerful generator than my trusty Yamaha. After thorough research, I opted for the WEN generator and I couldn’t be happier with my choice. Surprisingly, this generator is not much heavier than my previous one, yet it delivers a solid 2200 Watts effortlessly. The quiet operation and first-pull start make it a dream to use, even in chilly weather as low as 16°F. During a recent winter camping trip, the WEN generator performed flawlessly, powering both the microwave and an electric heater without a hitch. The option for an “echo” setting ensures long-lasting use when full power isn’t necessary. I also appreciate the thoughtful tip about using the generator’s box for storage and transportation. Overall, I am thoroughly impressed with the WEN generator’s performance and durability, especially after hearing glowing reviews from friends who own other WEN products. It’s a reliable companion for any RV adventure, offering great value for the price.

Nice little generator. I’ve used it a few times already and enjoy how quiet it is compared to my much larger 10500 watt generator. If my power goes out and I don’t think it’ll be out long I’ll hook this up to my house to power the refrigerator and some lights and fans. I turn off all my 240v breakers and use a custom cord the will feed both legs of my panel. That way I have all my lights on, which are all led so not much of a load, I can use my TV’s and internet. It also has a eco mode which adjusts the rpms of the motor to the size of the load.

Waited a year to review (about 100 hrs on the machine)..
Ok, here’s the deal. Take it from a retired home builder with lots of generator experience, if you plan to rely on this unit to make a daily living, (think food truck) I would save my pennies and go for the twice as expensive Honda only because they are proven to last forever. But, for any other application, especially camping, look no further than the WEN 56200i.
Mine does everything it’s advertised to do but no more. By that I mean, you cannot exceed the 1600 watt continuous or 2000 motor start surge max. So before you click “buy”, know your wattage, especially the start up power of motors involved. Read the directions! I can keep mine in econo mode in my camper van and watch TV, run my small refer and a small fan if need be, all at one time. In this application, it only revs up for a second or two when the refer compressor kicks in and then right back down to a purr, Really quite. If I want to use my Keurig clone or the microwave, yes, I actually have to get out of my recliner and hit the switch to get out of econo for a few minutes. It can then easily handle these appliances one at a time.
It’s quite, sips fuel, fairly light and the motor never misses.Starts on first or second pull every time. The only drawback is changing the oil every 25 hrs, but it’s easy to do.
Just watch the price, Last year it went back and forth from around $485 to a low of $410. And oh yeah, never, never ever leave fuel in it unused for more than a month, or you will be looking for a new carb.

Update, 6-11-21. Ok, so I’ve had this machine almost 5 years now and so, how’s it going? In a word, perfect. Probably about 500 hours and still runs like new. After the first few oil changes, I really think you could probably go around 35 hrs instead of the 25 called for because at 25 the oil is still amber in color. The only thing I would add to my initial review is that when you let it sit for a month or two, especially in the winter, you may have to pull the starter as many as 15-20 times to start. DON’T GIVE UP. IT WILL START. After that it’s back to the 1 or 2 pulls. Probably a gas in the carb thing. Anyway…. Still going strong and highly recommend.

This generator offers great value for the price. I’ve completed the engine break-in period and after changing the oil at 8 hours, it powered approximately 1700 watts for over an hour without any issues. There are some expected compromises at this price point – the oil dipstick/drain plug is plastic with no magnet to collect metal shavings during break-in (though the oil appeared clean). No oil is included, so have 5w-30 ready or prepare to purchase some.

My only concern is that on my unit, the choke graphic is incorrectly printed on the generator’s front panel. You need to do the opposite of what it shows: pull the choke OUT to start and push it IN when running. This labeling issue will likely be corrected soon, so units purchased after early 2025 may have correct symbols. The written instructions seem accurate, just not the graphics.

This compact generator is fantastic. It was excellently packaged and delivered in pristine condition. Starting it up is straightforward, and it operates perfectly. I replaced my Harbor Freight Predator with this model, which is similar in size and noise level, but offers slightly more power while costing $200 less!

I initially purchased a WEN 1250 generator and later acquired two WEN 2500 models. While my experience with the 1250 was positive, the 2500 offers significantly better value for just $100 more. Despite similar dimensions and weight, the 2500 delivers double the power output, features a larger fuel tank and bigger engine.

The 2500’s control panel has a different layout that allows engine shutdown either by switching off ignition or by turning off fuel to let the carburetor run dry (taking about 3 minutes) – a useful feature for carburetor maintenance. I particularly appreciate the traditional pull knob choke design. Additional conveniences include a fuel gauge and run timer.

Even if you don’t need the full 2.5 kW capacity, the 2500 model is still preferable as it will have extended service life when running below maximum output. It shares the 1250’s excellent qualities – quiet operation, minimal vibration, and first-pull starts. The 2500 also offers easier, less messy oil changes with its more accessible fill port.

The good thing is that it turns on quickly, it’s easy to start, and it’s not too heavy. The bad thing is that it’s not quiet. It’s not suitable for an apartment due to how noisy it is.

I received the 2500 watt unit and was extremely disappointed with the quality control. The air cleaner was missing a necessary nut, and the oil dipstick had been left loose, causing oil to leak everywhere. The photos demonstrate these issues. Very unsatisfactory product inspection.
