Treasures from Mushroom Picking

Mushroom picking is one of the activities people do during treasure hunting. Some do it in groups, and others do it alone. The best places to go mushroom hunting and go home with treasures are protected forests. These places usually have guides and rules to follow to ensure maximum safety and success. Playing tetri mania games is intriguing. But, going on an adventure to hunt mushrooms is an unforgettable expedition.

It is good to hunt for mushrooms, but do not do it at the expense of your safety. Some mushrooms are poisonous, so you need to be careful when picking them. If you are new to this treasure hunting activity, bring a guide or a friend who can distinguish between edible and inedible mushroom treasures. If you come across a mushroom that you do not know, leave it alone. Depending on where you live, you can find the Saffron Milk Cap or the Slippery Jack mushrooms. These are edible treasures that you can bring back home and cook.

  • Saffron Milk Cap – Its scientific name is Lactarius delicious. Saffron Milk Cap grows in clusters under coniferous trees and on moist, well-drained soils. It has a mild taste and an aromatic smell. The delicious Saffron Milk Cap tastes great if you serve it in stews, sauces, or casseroles.
  • Slippery Jack – The scientific name for these mushrooms is Boletus Portentosus. These widespread plants grow under coniferous trees. They are common in Europe, North East America, and Australia. These mushrooms are easy to cook by frying. Alternatively, you can dry them up and add them to your stews or soups later on.

When you go to the forest, you will find many colorful mushrooms that you can photograph and pick. Get familiar with the two edible mushrooms we have mentioned above and any others before you begin your treasure hunt. If you plan your expedition around a protected forest, there will be free information brochures provided for visitors’ use. Ask for these resources to avoid picking poisonous mushrooms.

Some forests occupy many hectares of land. If this is where you want to go hunting for exotic wood mushrooms, do not come alone. It will be so much fun if you come with a guide or friends who have been there before. All of you should make sure that it is mushroom season to pick edible treasures. If other activities are going on in the forest, such as timber harvesting, keep a distance. To ensure success, do the following things:

  • Bring a pocket knife. It is a necessary tool for mushroom harvesting. Since you want to repeat the same activity in the next season, do not pluck the whole plant. Instead, cut the mushroom stem with a knife. Then, bury the remnant so it can grow again.
  • As you hunt for your treasures, walk slowly while looking around you. The goal is to get as much as you can. So, practice this tip not to miss anything.
  • Look for mounds as you walk. If you see even a little mound, remove the forest cover and pick your mushroom.
  • When you find one mushroom, there might be others around. So do not walk away too soon. Look around first.

Now you know what to do in your next mushroom-picking expedition. Are you ready to pick some treasure?
