Interesting in driving for Uber? Here’s everything you need to know about Uber requirements to start up the ultimate side (or main) hustle…

36% of Americans have used a ridesharing service such as Uber, a statistic that has more than doubled in five years. Some urban residents are forgoing vehicle ownership entirely as states across the nation struggle to implement the new legislation for the growing industry.

In short, ridesharing is more than an ephemeral trend — it’s the future of transportation. If you want to get in on the action, now’s the time to join a rideshare service such as Uber. The question is, what are the qualifications to get started?

Don’t let bad information prevent you from landing a job in the rideshare industry. Here are all the Uber requirements you need to know.

Uber Requirements for Drivers

Driver qualifications for the rideshare industry are far lower than those of taxi businesses. But that doesn’t mean just anyone can get involved. For example, you need more than a valid US driver’s license.

Uber requires its drivers to have at least one year of experience on the road. This mandate assumes you are 23 years of age or older. Drivers under this age limit need at least 3 years of experience behind the wheel.

So if you are a recent high school graduate looking for your first freelance opportunity, don’t get your hopes up.

In addition to a license and driving experience, you must possess car registration in your state of residence. Note, however, that the registration can be in another person’s name.

Uber will not consider drivers with a criminal history or marks on their driving record. This includes minor violations, such as driving over the speed limit. You’ll have to wait for these violations to drop off your record before applying.

What’s the most common sticking point when becoming an Uber driver? Insurance. If you’re serious about becoming an Uber driver, it’s in your best interest to have a masterful grasp on the complicated insurance environment.

To become an Uber driver, you at least need the minimal insurance coverage required by your state. Uber itself will offer varying insurance coverage depending on where you are in the ridesharing process. For example, Uber will offer liability coverage while you are logged into the Uber app, but they will not offer comprehensive and collision coverage until you are picking up or transporting a passenger.

If you want your personal insurance policy to cover an accident that occurs while logged into the Uber app, you’ll need commercial insurance for Uber.

Uber Requirements for Vehicles

Uber offers different vehicle tiers that all have their own requirements. However, there are some similarities. All Uber vehicles must have four doors and seats for at least four passengers.

In addition, Uber disallows clunkers. The vehicle age requirement varies depending on where you live, but in general, the vehicle cannot be older than 15 to 20 years. It will also need to pass any state safety or emissions tests.

Vehicles with physical or mechanical damage will have a hard time getting approved. Visible damage, such as scratches or dents, is prohibited on Uber vehicles. Smaller mechanical problems, such as a malfunctioning air conditioner, will need to be repaired before applying for the position.

Now, let’s talk about some of the different Uber tiers.

UberX is the standard rideshare service. If your vehicle is a sedan and fits the criteria listed above, then congratulations. It should be a good fit for the UberX vehicle option.

The next tier is UberXL. These vehicles must have room to transport at least six passengers. It’s reserved for larger vehicles, such as SUVs and minivans.

UberSUV is for SUV’s only. These vehicles must be no older than about five years. Even if yours falls in this age range, Uber must also consider it a luxury vehicle.

UberBlack consists of black luxury sedans. It’s not enough for the outside to be black, but the inside, too. Leather only.

Other Uber tiers are available but much more niche. So long as your vehicle qualifies for UberX, you’re good to go. Take note that you received better rates for driving a vehicle in a higher Uber tier.

Completing the Uber Application Process

Becoming an Uber driver starts with an online application. You’ll find the signup notification in the top right corner of the main website. From here you enter personal information, such as your email address, name, and city.

As a small tip, locate an Uber invite code before submitting this information. You can find this from a variety of related websites, businesses, or Uber ads. Invite codes will help you score special offers, such as the new driver bonus.

Uber will ask for information about your vehicle once you submit the basics. It may vary slightly from the requirements listed in the previous section. That’s because different states have different qualifications.

Lastly, you’ll provide your social security number and consent to a background check. This is the easy part. If Uber approves your application, which can take a good deal of time, you’ll need to have your vehicle inspected by a professional.

Certain Uber locations will perform the 19-point vehicle inspection for free. Otherwise, you can work through Jiffy Lube or Uber’s list of approved mechanics.

Start Earning With Uber

Uber requirements may be more hands-on than other freelance outlets. However, the rideshare industry promises an excellent source of income through Uber payments and the occasional tip.
