Ways To Spice Up Your Workout And Keep It Interesting

We all love keeping fit and these days there are thousands of different sports, workouts, and fitness trends that can help you stay in shape. Fitness experts agree that one of the most important things when it comes to working out is to keep the body guessing. Our bodies are incredibly adaptable and so if you only do the same workout all the time, they will soon become accustomed to it and you will stop making any gains. Furthermore, doing the same workout over and over again soon gets boring and this will cause you to lose motivation and not fully commit to your training. 

 

To help all the gym bunnies out there who are looking to keep things interesting, here are our tips for awesome sports and activities to spice up your workout.

1. Stand Up Paddleboarding

Stand up paddleboarding, or SUP boarding as it is commonly known, has exploded in popularity in recent years and is not only a chance to get out on the ocean on a sunny day but is also a fantastic workout. SUP boarding is great for cardio, provides a full-body workout, and helps improve balance. It is also an excellent way to lose weight as paddling at even a leisurely pace burns around 400 calories an hour. As well as the physical fitness gains, exercising outside is the perfect way to get fresh air and sunshine which can have so many benefits for mental and emotional health as well as strengthening your immune system.

A cool trend that has emerged in recent years is SUP Board Yoga where yoga is performed balanced on a SUP board. This really takes yoga practice to another level as practitioners need increased concentration, core stability, and balance. There are many models of SUP boards available online and these paddle boards are especially suitable for yoga. When choosing a SUP board for your yoga practice, look out for one that is light so that you can easily carry it to quiet secluded spots but that is very buoyant so it will stay balanced and upright while you are doing your poses.

 

2. Martial Arts

Martial arts have always been a popular way to stay fit and learn to protect yourself but with the rise in popularity of UFC, the number of different martial arts that you can try is enormous. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai, Taekwondo, Western Boxing, and many many more are available in gyms in every city in the world. The great thing about martial arts is that these days, instructors recognize that people want to practice for different reasons. Some people are nervous about trying out a martial art because they are scared of getting hurt but the reality is that you won’t be anywhere near a martial arts contest until you have trained for a significant amount of time, and even then, only if you tell your instructor that you want to.

Exercise trends like boxercise have emerged in recent years which provide the cardio and calisthenic muscle training benefits of martial arts but without any of the combat elements involved. Whilst these are a lot of fun and are a great way to get fit, you will get even more benefits from just training the genuine martial art with a real instructor, and will also learn some valuable self-defense skills. After a few months of training, many people are often surprised that it is actually the combat aspect of learning martial arts that they enjoy the most.

 

3. Winter Sports

Whilst not everyone will have the opportunity to spend a weekend in the Alps, there are so many winter sports that you can try which can give you a great workout. Skiing and snowboarding are two of the most popular winter sports and are great for cardio, full-body strength and balance. If you don’t live anywhere near the mountains, there are many indoor ski centers and artificial slopes where you practice your downhill and slalom all year round.

Ice skating is an awesome fat-burning exercise and helps strengthen the muscles in your legs and improve your cardio. If you are an experienced ice skater, hockey and figure skating are amazing sports that can provide a huge number of health and fitness benefits. Figure skating strengthens your muscles and improves your explosive capabilities, balance, speed, and agility whilst ice hockey is great for leg power, hand-eye coordination, and upper body strength.

 

There are so many awesome fitness options that can help you get in shape, build muscle, and maintain a healthy lifestyle. It is so important to mix up your workouts in order to keep them interesting and to prevent your gains from stagnating. Aim to try out one new sport or activity once a week alongside your normal workouts and if possible, take part in both indoor and outdoor activities and exercise. This will help you to stay physically fit and healthy as well as ensuring good mental health and a happy mood.
