Search for how many steps are in a mile and you will be told 2,000. It is a clean number, it is easy to remember, and it almost certainly is not yours. Two thousand steps to the mile describes one specific walker: someone about six foot four, moving at a moderate pace.
That is not an average. It is the tall end of the range. Everyone shorter covers less ground per step and therefore needs more steps to finish the mile, and the gap is wide enough to matter. A five-foot walker needs roughly 2,557 steps where a six-foot-three walker needs 2,046.
Where 2,000 comes from, and who it actually fits
A mile is 63,360 inches. Getting that in 2,000 steps means a step length of 31.68 inches, which is a little over two and a half feet. That is a long step to hold for a mile.
Work backwards from it and you can name the person it belongs to. Using the step-length model below, 31.68 inches at a moderate pace is the step of a woman about 6 ft 4.7 in tall, or a man about 6 ft 4.3 in. That is the walker 2,000 describes.
Round that and the rule of thumb becomes statable: 2,000 steps a mile is a 6 ft 4 in figure. It is not wrong, it is just not general. Quoted to someone of average height it understates their step count by several hundred a mile.
Published figures do drift upward once a page does the arithmetic. Inch Calculator gives "about 2,200 steps to walk a mile." The Calculator Site puts it at "around 2,250 steps to walk one mile at a moderate pace of about 3 mph." Both are closer than 2,000, and both are still single numbers standing in for a range.
Your height sets the baseline
Step length is estimated from height using a factor published in Weinberg's AN-602 (2002): step length equals height multiplied by 0.415 for men and 0.413 for women. It is the same model Inch Calculator uses, and it is the one behind the table here.

Read the two columns against each other before you read anything else. At the same height, the difference between the male and female figures is about twelve steps a mile. Across the height range it is more than five hundred.
That ordering is worth keeping. Sex is a rounding detail in this calculation; height is the calculation. Any page that splits its answer by sex and then quotes one number for everybody has emphasised the smaller of the two effects.
Your pace moves it nearly as much as your height does
The part almost no page mentions is that you do not have one step length. You have a step length at each speed, because walking faster lengthens the step as well as quickening it.

For that 5 ft 6 in walker, strolling costs 2,759 steps a mile and walking very briskly costs 1,997. The same person, the same mile, 762 steps apart. Pace is not a refinement on top of height. It is the second half of the answer.
It also means the question "how many steps in a mile" is underspecified as asked. A dog walk and a walk to catch a train are different conversions for the same body.
Why step length follows the square root of speed
The pace adjustment is not a fitted fudge factor. It falls out of two definitions that were already there.

Walk ratio — step length divided by cadence — is close to constant for a given person across normal walking speeds. Hold it fixed and the algebra above has only one solution. No coefficient had to be invented, which is why this adjustment can be stated rather than merely asserted.

Note the last row. At a very brisk pace a 5 ft 6 in walker finally reaches the 31.7-inch step that 2,000 steps a mile requires. The famous number is reachable — by sprinting the definition rather than by being average.
Where this model stops working
Walk ratio is only approximately constant, and it stops being constant at slow speeds. Murakami and Otaka, writing in the Journal of Physical Therapy Science in 2017, estimated the lower boundary at about 62 metres per minute, which is 2.31 mph.
The slow band above has a midpoint of 2.2 mph. That is below the boundary, so the slow row is an extrapolation rather than a fitted value. The calculator says so on screen when you select it, and it is said here for the same reason.
This matters most for exactly the people likeliest to look the number up: someone walking with a stick, pushing a pram, recovering from surgery, or walking a small dog. Their real steps-per-mile is probably higher than even the slow row suggests.
What this does to 10,000 steps
The 10,000-step target is usually translated as five miles. Inch Calculator's chart states that "10,000 steps equals approximately 5 miles." Five miles at 10,000 steps is 2,000 steps a mile again — the six-foot-four figure, arriving through a different door.

Nobody in that table reaches five miles. The tallest walker in it falls 0.15 miles short, and the shortest falls almost a mile short. If you have been logging 10,000 steps as five miles, you have been over-recording your distance by somewhere between 3 and 24 percent.

The target itself has a thinner foundation than the conversion does. It was not the output of a study.
“The origins of the number go back to 1965, when a Japanese company made a device named Manpo-kei, which translates to '10,000 steps meter.' 'The name was a marketing tool,' she says.”
Manpo-kei launched after the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. The number was chosen because it was memorable, not because 10,000 had been tested against 8,000 or 12,000. It became a global default anyway.
That is worth knowing before you convert it precisely. Translating a marketing figure into miles to two decimal places gives false weight to the wrong half of the sum. The conversion can be right while the target it converts was always arbitrary.
Getting your own number
Do
- Enter your own height and your usual walking pace rather than accepting a default
- Pick the pace band that matches the walk you are actually converting, not your fastest
- Pace out a measured distance yourself if you want a figure that is yours rather than modelled
- Treat the slow band as an estimate, since it sits below where the model was validated
- Re-check the conversion when the walk changes: hills, sand, snow and crowds all shorten the step

- Use 2,000 steps a mile unless you are around six foot four
- Convert 10,000 steps to five miles
- Assume the male and female figures differ meaningfully at the same height
- Trust a step count as exact — the sensor miscounts in both directions before any conversion starts
- Apply one steps-per-mile figure to a whole day that contained several different kinds of walking
The model here estimates step length from height. It does not know your leg proportions, your shoes, what you were carrying, or whether the route was flat. If the number needs to be exact, walk a measured quarter-mile and count. Everything above is what to use when you cannot.
