The formula, worked line by line

The pound is not measured against the kilogram, it is defined by it. On 1 July 1959 the standards bodies of the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa signed the International Yard and Pound Agreement. Before that the two countries maintained slightly different pounds against their own physical prototypes. Since 1959 there is one number, and it is exact.

The avoirdupois pound is exactly 0.45359237 kilograms; the yard is exactly 0.9144 meters.

So converting kilograms to pounds is a division by that exact constant, which is identical to multiplying by its reciprocal, 2.2046226218487757 and onwards. This tool divides rather than multiplying by a truncated reciprocal, because division by the defined value is the form that cannot accumulate error no matter how large the input gets.

Freight rate bands, laboratory work, and any threshold written into a contract are exactly the places where a fifth of a percent decides which side of a line you land on, so use the full factor there and keep the shortcut for the supermarket.

Mass is not weight

One distinction worth carrying away, because it is the source of most arguments about this conversion. The kilogram and the pound used here are both units of mass, and mass does not change with location. Weight is a force, which is mass times local gravitational acceleration, and it does change. The pound-force, the unit used in engineering, is the force one avoirdupois pound of mass experiences under standard gravity of 9.80665 meters per second squared.

On a bathroom scale on Earth the distinction is invisible and the two numbers agree, which is why everyday language treats them as the same thing. In an engineering calculation, a torque spec, or anything leaving the planet, they are not, and the pound-mass to pound-force conversion needs that gravity constant rather than this one.

Airline baggage allowances in pounds

Travel is where the conversion earns its keep, because most airlines outside the United States quote baggage in kilograms and enforce it with a scale at the desk. A 23 kg checked allowance is 50.71 lb, so a US traveler used to a 50 lb domestic limit is fine but only just.

A 7 kg carry-on cap is 15.43 lb, which is tight enough that the laptop and the water bottle matter. The 32 kg figure that many carriers set as the absolute maximum for a single piece, on handling-safety grounds, is 70.55 lb. Weigh the bag at home rather than repacking on the terminal floor, and remember that an overweight fee is usually charged per bag per leg, not once per trip.
