The 1959 International Yard and Pound Agreement fixed the avoirdupois pound at exactly 0.45359237 kilograms, and the ounce is one sixteenth of that pound. For a larger figure the pounds-and-ounces reading is usually what a US reader wants. 500 grams is 17.636981 ounces; divide by 16 and the whole part is 1 pound, which accounts for 16 ounces, leaving 1.64 ounces over. Both the gram and the avoirdupois ounce are units of mass, and mass does not change with where you are standing. Weight is a force, mass multiplied by local gravity, and it does change. It surfaces the moment a calculation involves force rather than quantity of matter. Engineering work separates the pound-mass from the pound-force for exactly this reason. Coffee is the everyday case where both units appear on the same counter. A 250 gram bag is 8.82 ounces, a 1 kilogram bag is 35.27 ounces, and an 18 gram espresso dose is 0.63 ounces. A 454 g pack is the metric restatement of one pound, which is why it is 16.01 oz and not a round 16.
Precision is the other thing worth setting straight. A kitchen scale that reads to one gram cannot resolve better than about 0.04 ounces, so quoting a converted weight to three decimals invents accuracy the instrument never had. Two decimals is the honest ceiling for a one-gram scale, and one decimal is plenty for anything you are about to eat.

The practical rule is to read the label rather than the number. Silverware, coins, bullion and jewelry quantities are troy. Food, post, freight, sports equipment and every consumer package sold by weight are avoirdupois. Pharmacies once used a third system, apothecaries weight, which shared the troy ounce; it was withdrawn from general use long ago and metric units replaced it.
Postage bands and net-quantity labels
Shipping is where the conversion has money attached, because postal pricing is banded and a band is a hard edge. United States Postal Service letter mail is rated in ounces, so a parcel weighed on a metric scale has to cross into ounces before you can tell which band it falls in. The 3.5 ounce letter ceiling is 99.22 grams, and 13 ounces is 368.54 grams.
Round the wrong way at a boundary and the price changes, so weigh the packed item rather than converting a guess. Postal services also round up to the next whole band rather than to the nearest one, which means 99.3 grams and 130 grams are charged the same way even though they look far apart on a metric scale.
