The arithmetic of a tip is one multiplication: the bill times a percentage. Nobody actually struggles with that part, at least not with a phone in hand. What people struggle with is everything wrapped around the multiplication. Which percentage does this situation call for? Is the base the subtotal or the taxed total? And what happens to the number when four people split the check? Those three judgment calls are where the real money moves, and they are what this guide pins down.
The mistakes are quiet ones. Tipping 20% but calculating it on the tax-included total, which overshoots the convention on every restaurant meal. Splitting the bill before the tip and letting everyone round their own share down, which can pull an intended 20% to 17.4% without anyone deciding to be cheap. Carrying restaurant rates to a delivery order, or delivery rates to a sit-down dinner. Each slip is small on one check. Across a year of eating out they harden into a habit, and a habit is worth getting right exactly once.
The quick answer
Here is the table people actually skim for. One caveat before you read it: tipping in the US is a custom, not a law. Nothing below is a rule, and all of it flexes with the quality of the service.

The restaurant row anchors the whole system, so it is the one worth memorizing: 18–20% is the typical range, 15% reads as the low end, and 25% rewards service you especially want to call out. Every other situation on the table is a variation on that baseline, discounted or restructured for how the service is delivered.

The formula behind every tip
Strip away the etiquette and a tip is three lines of arithmetic, in a fixed order:
- tip = bill × (tip% ÷ 100)
- total = bill + tip
- per person = total ÷ split
Run the calculator's defaults through it. A $50.00 bill at 20%: 50 × (20 ÷ 100) = $10.00 tip, and 50 + 10 = $60.00 total. Put four people on the check and each owes 60 ÷ 4 = $15.00. Drop the rate to 18% on the same bill and the tip becomes $9.00, the total $59.00. That is the entire engine; everything else in this guide is about choosing the right inputs.
Two details in how the tool runs this math mirror how the real world works, and both are worth knowing. First, the split is always a whole number of people, one at minimum. There is no dividing a check across two and a half diners, so the tool rounds the people count to a whole number before dividing. Second, the division happens on the total, not the bill. The tip is shared along with the food, which is the detail the splitting section comes back to, because it is the one people get wrong at the table.
The calculator also reports each person's share of the tip alone: $10.00 ÷ 4 = $2.50 in the default case. That figure earns its place the moment one person covers the bill in cash and the rest of the table settles up the tip, or when you want to sanity-check what each diner is actually contributing to the service.
Step by step in the calculator
- Enter the bill. Use the pre-tax subtotal if you want the conventional base; the section below covers why, and what it costs if you use the taxed total instead.

The restaurant ladder: 15, 18, 20, 25
The percentage buttons on the calculator are not arbitrary. They are the four rungs of US sit-down custom: 15% at the low end, 18% and 20% as the typical range, and 25% for service you want to reward. Put the same $50.00 bill on every rung and watch what actually changes:
- 15% → $7.50 tip, $57.50 total
- 18% → $9.00 tip, $59.00 total
- 20% → $10.00 tip, $60.00 total
- 25% → $12.50 tip, $62.50 total
Stare at the spread rather than the rungs. The distance between the lowest customary tip and the most generous one is $5.00 on a $50 dinner. If you are agonizing between 18% and 20%, you are agonizing over one dollar. Pick the higher rung when the service was good and move on with your evening; the decision is smaller than the deliberation.
The rungs carry meaning beyond their size, though. A 15% tip reads as a message in a way that $1.00 of savings does not, which is exactly why the low end exists: it is the customary way to register mediocre service without stiffing anyone. And 25% is the opposite signal, reserved for service you want the server to remember. Flat amounts translate back into the ladder cleanly, and translating them is worth the ten seconds, because the ladder is the language the tip will be read in. Decide to leave $12.00 on that $50.00 bill and you have left 12 ÷ 50 = 24%, a hair under the standout rung. Leave $9.00 and you have left exactly 18%, squarely in the typical range. The reverse check works on old receipts too: divide the tip you left by the bill and you learn what rate your "eh, call it twenty bucks" habit actually pays. People who round to friendly numbers are usually tipping a full rung higher or lower than they think, and which direction depends entirely on where the bill happened to land.
Pre-tax or after-tax: pick your base
A small but real decision hides underneath the percentage: what number you multiply it against. The standard convention is to tip on the pre-tax subtotal, and the reasoning is clean. Sales tax is not part of the service; it goes to the state, not the server, so the tip percentage applies to the part of the bill that represents food and service. Tipping on the subtotal is also slightly cheaper, which is a pleasant side effect rather than the reason.
Here is what the choice costs, on a receipt with a $50.00 subtotal and a $4.00 tax line, so a $54.00 total. Twenty percent of the subtotal is $10.00. Twenty percent of the taxed total is $10.80. The gap is 80 cents, and it will always be exactly your tip rate applied to the tax line: 20% of $4.00.
Both choices are acceptable. The convention favors the subtotal, and the difference is small, but tipping on the full total is a perfectly fine way to run slightly generous by default. The calculator is agnostic: enter whichever number you want as the bill, and the math is identical; only the base changes. Bars, delivery, and rides
Away from the sit-down table, the customs restructure themselves around how the service is delivered. The formula never changes; the percentage does.
At a bar, the custom is roughly $1–2 a drink, or 15–20% on a tab you run. The per-drink version fits ordering rounds and paying as you go; the percentage fits a card left open all evening. Run a $40.00 tab at the percentage custom and you land between $6.00 and $8.00, which is the range the per-drink rule would produce for a similar evening anyway. The two conventions converge because they are describing the same service from two directions.
Food delivery runs 10–15%, with a few-dollar minimum, and the minimum is the important part. Ten percent of a $14.00 order is $1.40, but the driver's trip did not shrink because your order did: same distance, same time, same doorstep. The minimum exists because the tip is really paying for the trip, and the percentage only tracks the trip's value once the order is big enough. On small orders, ignore the percentage and pay the trip.
Taxis and rideshares sit around 15%, figured on the fare. A $20.00 ride at 15% is a $3.00 tip. No minimum convention here to memorize; the fare already scales with the trip.
Notice what stays constant: every one of these runs through the same three lines of math. You are never learning a new calculation, just choosing the percentage the occasion calls for and, in the delivery case, applying a floor to the result.

Splitting is the reason most people reach for a tip calculator at all, which is why the tool leads with the per-person figure instead of burying it under the tip and total. But the split has an order of operations, and the order is the whole game: tip on the whole bill first, then divide the total across the group.
Take dinner for three, an $86.40 bill, service worth 20%:
- tip = 86.40 × 0.20 = $17.28
- total = 86.40 + 17.28 = $103.68
- per person = 103.68 ÷ 3 = $34.56
Each person's slice of the tip inside that figure is 17.28 ÷ 3 = $5.76. One number per diner, the server receives the full 20%, and nobody at the table has to do arithmetic on their phone while the card reader waits.
Notice what dividing the total accomplishes that dividing the bill would not: the tip gets shared along with the food. Split only the $86.40 and each person pays $28.80 for their meal while the $17.28 tip floats, unassigned, waiting for someone to volunteer it or for the table to reinvent the calculation in fragments. Divide the $103.68 and the tip is already inside everyone's number. The percentage you chose holds across the whole table by construction, not by vigilance.

The rounding-down leak
Here is the failure mode the split order protects you from, and it is worth seeing with real numbers because no one in the story behaves badly.
Same dinner: $86.40, three people, everyone intends 20%. This time the group splits the bill first. Each share is 86.40 ÷ 3 = $28.80, and each person owes 20% of that: $5.76. But $5.76 is an awkward number to hand over, so each diner does the natural thing and calls it $5.00. Three fives hit the table. The server collects $15.00 on an $86.40 bill, which is 17.4%, not the 20% every single person at the table meant to leave.
The leak is 76 cents per person, $2.28 on the check, and it is invisible because each individual rounding felt harmless. The percentage eroded in three small, defensible steps. Run the same habit across a table of six and the erosion doubles again.
The fix costs nothing: compute the tip once, on the whole bill, and divide the grand total evenly. Rounding the final per-person figure up to a clean number is fine, and it errs in the direction of the person who carried your plates. It is rounding each fragment down that quietly rewrites the rate you chose.
A full dinner, end to end
Put the whole method together on one realistic check. Four people, a $124.00 pre-tax subtotal, solid service that earns the 18% rung:
- tip = 124.00 × 0.18 = $22.32
- total = 124.00 + 22.32 = $146.32
- per person = 146.32 ÷ 4 = $36.58
Each person's share of the tip inside that $36.58 is 22.32 ÷ 4 = $5.58. Done: one calculation, four equal payments, the server gets the full 18%.
Now test how much the rate decision actually matters. Bump the same dinner to 20%: the tip becomes 124.00 × 0.20 = $24.80, the total $148.80, and the per-person figure $37.20. The difference between the 18% dinner and the 20% dinner is 62 cents per person. That is the number to keep in mind the next time the table stalls over which rung the service earned. At the per-person level, the generosity question is nearly always coffee change; decide it on the service and settle the check.
One reminder from earlier: that $124.00 should be the pre-tax subtotal if you want the conventional base. If the receipt in front of you only shows the taxed total, either back the tax out first or accept that you are tipping a touch over the rate you picked, on purpose.
Mental math when your phone stays in your pocket
The calculator is faster, but the shortcut system is worth owning because it runs on any bill without ceremony. Everything builds from 10%, which is just the decimal point moving one place left.
On the $86.40 bill from earlier:
- 10% — move the decimal: $8.64
- 20% — double the 10% figure: 8.64 × 2 = $17.28
- 15% — the 10% figure plus half of it: 8.64 + 4.32 = $12.96
- 18% — take the 20% figure and knock a tenth of it back off: 17.28 − 1.73 ≈ $15.55
Check that last one against the exact math: 86.40 × 0.18 = $15.552. The shortcut lands on the same answer because 18% is literally 20% minus a tenth of 20% — the only slack is the penny you dropped when 1.728 became 1.73. Carry the pennies and none of these are approximations; they are the same percentages reassembled from pieces that are easy to hold in your head.

- Tipping on the taxed total without meaning to. The overshoot is always tip% × the tax line — 80 cents on a receipt with $4.00 of tax. Fine as a choice, sloppy as an accident.
- Splitting the bill before the tip. Friendly rounding then pulls 20% down to 17.4% on the worked example above. Tip on the whole bill, divide the total.
- Rounding each person's share down. 76 cents a head became $2.28 off the server's tip. Round the final per-person number up instead, if you round at all.
- Using one rate everywhere. A sit-down dinner runs 18–20%; delivery runs 10–15% with a minimum; a bar is $1–2 a drink or 15–20% on the tab. The setting picks the rate.
- Applying a percentage to a tiny delivery order. $1.40 on a $14.00 order is not a tip for a full trip. The few-dollar minimum governs small orders.
- Treating the buttons as law. They encode custom, and custom flexes with the service. The custom field exists for the in-between rates and for flat amounts you have already decided on.
