Days to Weeks Converter

Convert days to weeks — seven to the week, and how a 30-day month splits.

In short

How many weeks is 30 days?

Thirty days is 4.286 weeks: four whole weeks with two days left over. A week is exactly seven days, so the only month that divides cleanly is February in a common year, at exactly four weeks. Everywhere else there is a remainder, and it does not average away.

Divide by seven for the decimal answer; take the whole part and the leftover when you need a date rather than a duration.

The formula, worked line by line

There is only one line of arithmetic here, and no constant to argue about. The seven-day week is a convention with no astronomical basis: it is not a division of the lunar month or the solar year, and it has run unbroken for millennia regardless of either. Seven is simply seven.

A duration is represented either in years, months, days and time, or in weeks — the two forms cannot be combined.
The effect of ISO 8601-1:2019 clause 5.5.2.2

That standard rule is worth knowing because it explains a class of bug. A system that accepts P4W and a system that accepts P30D are both conformant, and a value that mixes the two is not valid in either. The remainder has to be expressed in the same unit as everything else.

weeks = days / 7
30 / 7 = 4.286 -> 4 weeks and 2 days
31 / 7 = 4.429 -> 4 weeks and 3 days
28 / 7 = 4 exactly - the only month length that does
365 / 7 = 52.143 -> 52 weeks and 1 day
366 / 7 = 52.286 -> 52 weeks and 2 days

Multiplying the fractional part back by seven is the whole trick. It is the step most people skip, and it is the step that turns a number into something you can put in a diary.

When the leftover days genuinely do not matter

If you are comparing two durations — is a 100-day project longer than a 15-week one — the decimal is the right answer and the remainder is noise. The remainder matters the moment the result has to be a date, because a date has a weekday and the leftover days are what move it.

The months, ranked by how badly they fit

Every month length against the week
February, common year (28)
4 weeks exactly
February, leap year (29)
4 weeks and 1 day
April, June, September, November (30)
4 weeks and 2 days
The other seven months (31)
4 weeks and 3 days

Four of the twelve months are 30 days and seven are 31, so the two or three leftover days are the normal case and the clean fit is the exception.

Note the asymmetry: the one month that fits the week exactly is the one people are least likely to be thinking of when they say "about four weeks". They usually mean a 30 or 31-day month, and that is two or three days longer than four weeks.

How to use the days to weeks converter

A week is seven days by definition, not by measurement, so this conversion has no approximation in it at all. Divide the days by seven and the answer is exact. What is not exact is the fit between weeks and every other calendar unit, and that is where the page earns its place.

Seven divides into almost nothing tidily. It does not divide a month, a quarter or a year. So a division that is arithmetically exact still produces an answer with a remainder attached, and the remainder is usually the part that matters — it is the difference between a schedule that lands on the right weekday and one that drifts.

4 weeks + 2

What 30 days actually is

30 = 4 x 7 + 2

28 days

The only month that is whole weeks

February, common years only

52 weeks + 1

What 365 days is

366 days is 52 weeks and 2

That is the whole shape of it. Thirty days is four weeks and two days; thirty-one is four weeks and three. A common year is fifty-two weeks and one day, a leap year fifty-two and two. Every one of those leftovers is a day that has to land somewhere, and it lands on a weekday.

The practical rule is to decide which unit the thing you are counting actually runs on. Rent runs on months. Payroll may run on weeks. A statutory deadline runs on whatever the statute says, and courts do not accept a conversion as a substitute. Convert for comparison, never for compliance.

Which ISO week does a date fall in

Weeks are numbered as well as counted, and the numbering has its own rules about which week a January date belongs to. That page works out the week number for any date.

A week is exactly seven days, so nothing here is an approximation. The month rows assume the month length shown, not an average.

The remainder is the point, not an error

When a division leaves a remainder the instinct is to round it away. Here that instinct is wrong. The leftover days are not measurement noise; they are real days on which real things happen, and rounding them off is how a plan quietly finishes on the wrong weekday.

The answer to keep

The decimal is right for comparing durations. The remainder form is right for anything that has to land on a date, because the two extra days push every subsequent weekday along.

This is also why a monthly meeting on the first Tuesday moves around the month and a fortnightly one does not. Anything counted in whole weeks keeps its weekday forever. Anything counted in days or months does not, because neither is a multiple of seven.

Four weeks is not a month, and payroll proves it

The most common error in this conversion is treating four weeks as a month. Four weeks is 28 days. A calendar month averages 30.44. Over a year the difference is not small: twelve months is 365 days and thirteen four-week periods is 364, which is why the two are genuinely separate pay frequencies rather than two names for the same thing.

Weekly
52 paydays, covering 364 days
Four-weekly
13 paydays, covering 364 days
Monthly
12 paydays, covering the full year
The gap
a day or two, every single year

Weekly and four-weekly cover 364 days, so both fall short of the calendar and both periodically gain an extra period.

US wage regulation handles the same problem explicitly. To find the weekly equivalent of a monthly salary, 29 CFR 778.113 multiplies the monthly figure by twelve and divides by fifty-two. It does not divide by four, because four weeks is not a month, and the regulation would produce the wrong overtime rate if it did.
