One foot is exactly 0.3048 meters, so multiply feet by 0.3048. That figure is a definition rather than a measurement: the 1959 International Yard and Pound Agreement fixed the yard at 0.9144 meters, and a foot is one third of a yard. A standard 8 ft ceiling is 2.44 m.
The United States kept a second, very slightly longer foot for land surveying until 31 December 2022, when NIST and the National Geodetic Survey retired it.

The formula, worked line by line
The foot is not measured against the meter. It is defined by it, through the yard. On 1 July 1959 the national standards bodies of the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa signed the International Yard and Pound Agreement, which fixed the yard at a round metric number and left every imperial length unit downstream of it.

A foot is a third of a yard, so 0.9144 divided by 3 is 0.3048, exactly. An inch is a twelfth of that, so 0.0254, exactly. None of these three numbers has a hidden tail of digits, which is why a conversion done properly here introduces no error at all and only the display rounds.

Six feet is a useful anchor because it is close to 1.8 meters without being equal to it. The true value is 1.8288, so a metric form that asks for one decimal place takes 1.8 and a form that asks for two takes 1.83. Rounded to the nearest centimeter it is 183 cm.
The mental shortcut, and where it breaks
For a rough figure, take the feet, divide by 3, then subtract about one percent. Ten feet becomes 3.33, minus 1 percent is 3.30, against a true 3.048. That is already 8 percent out, which tells you the honest version: divide by 3 only when you want to know whether something is roughly three meters or roughly thirty.

The thirds shortcut always over-reads, by about 9.4 percent, because a yard is shorter than a meter.
A better mental version is to take three tenths of the feet and add a tiny bit: 100 feet is a bit over 30 meters, 50 feet is a bit over 15. That under-reads by only 1.6 percent and stays useful the whole way up the ladder, which is enough to sanity-check a converter but never enough to submit.
Square feet are a different multiplication
One trap deserves naming, because it costs real money on flooring and paint orders. Converting an area does not use 0.3048. It uses 0.3048 squared, which is 0.09290304, so a 12 by 14 foot room is 15.61 square meters and not 51.2. If a supplier quotes coverage per square meter, convert the area, never the sides.
The same logic runs one dimension further for volume, where the factor is 0.3048 cubed, or 0.028316846592 cubic meters per cubic foot. Concrete, mulch and freight are all sold that way, and cubing the length factor is the step people skip when a quantity suddenly looks thirty-five times too large.

A foot is a short unit that hides its precision well. Most of the time you want meters because a form, a spec sheet, a shipping label or a building code written outside the United States asks for them, and rounding by hand is how a ceiling height ends up a centimeter short on a drawing.

Interior work is where this conversion turns up most. Residential ceilings in the United States are commonly framed at 8, 9 or 10 feet, and every one of those lands on an awkward metric figure. A 12 by 14 foot bedroom is 3.66 by 4.27 meters, which is the pair a European furniture site wants.

Water is the other place the two systems collide. Pool and dive depths are posted in feet across the United States and in meters nearly everywhere else, so the same body of water carries two sets of signage. A 12 ft diving well is 3.66 m, a 5 ft shallow end is 1.52 m, and 60 ft down is 18.29 m.

The US survey foot and why it was retired
For most of the twentieth century the United States carried two feet at once. The international foot of exactly 0.3048 meters governed everyday measurement, while land surveying used the US survey foot, defined as 1200/3937 meters. That works out to 0.3048006096 meters, longer by roughly six ten-millionths of a meter.
Two parts per million sounds like nothing, and across a doorway it is. Across a state plane coordinate grid it is not. At 100,000 feet of surveyed distance the two feet disagree by 6.1 centimeters, and at one million feet, an ordinary magnitude for a coordinate value, the gap opens to 0.61 meters.

NIST and the National Geodetic Survey announced the retirement jointly, and the survey foot stopped being authorized for new work after 31 December 2022. Everything surveyed since uses the international foot or the meter itself. Older plats, deeds and coordinate files still carry survey-foot values, so the distinction still matters when you read historic paperwork.
The practical rule is short. If you are converting a room, a fence, a ceiling or a boat, use 0.3048 and stop thinking about it. If you are converting a published coordinate from a pre-2023 survey, find out which foot the document meant before you multiply, because the arithmetic cannot tell you afterwards.
Converting feet and inches in one pass
Almost every real measurement in feet arrives with inches attached, and that is where people slip. The mistake is treating 5 ft 10 in as 5.10 feet. It is not. Inches are twelfths, so ten of them are 0.8333 of a foot, and the figure you convert is 5.8333.

The shortcut that avoids the decimal entirely: convert the whole thing to inches first, then multiply by 0.0254. Here that is 80 inches times 0.0254, which is 2.032 meters, the same answer with one fewer rounding step.
The inch route is worth learning because 0.0254 is also exact, being 0.3048 divided by twelve. Any measurement you can express in whole inches converts in a single multiplication with no repeating decimal in the middle, which is why machinists and drafters tend to work that way rather than in decimal feet.
