A surplus is entered as a negative deficit, and the tool checks that the number actually points at the target: asking for a deficit while aiming at a heavier target returns no timeline rather than an answer that quietly makes no sense.

Everything rests on one conversion factor, and the conversion factor deserves scepticism. The figure of 7,700 kilocalories per kilogram is the metric restatement of 3,500 kilocalories per pound, published by Max Wishnofsky in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition in 1958 from the reasoning that a pound of adipose tissue is roughly 87 percent fat at about 9 kilocalories per gram.

Converted properly, 7,700 per kilogram is 3,493 per pound rather than exactly 3,500, and that rounding is the least of its problems. The real issue is that it is a straight line drawn through a curve, and the tool reports it as such rather than pretending the line is the territory.

The second thing this tool reports is a safety rail rather than a projection. Past roughly 1 percent of body weight a week, weight loss takes a disproportionate share of lean tissue rather than fat, which is why the tool marks faster plans as aggressive instead of obeying them silently.

For an 85 kg person that rail sits at 0.85 kg a week, so a 500 kcal deficit at 0.45 kg a week is comfortably inside it while a 1,000 kcal deficit at 0.91 kg a week is not. The tool also compares the implied intake against a resting metabolic rate when one is supplied, and flags a plan that would have you eating below what your body uses at complete rest.

The straight line and the territory

Here is why the line and the territory diverge. A fixed deficit is defined against maintenance, and maintenance is a function of body mass. As mass comes off, resting metabolism falls with it, so the same intake that produced a 500 kcal deficit at 85 kg produces something smaller at 78 kg, and smaller again at 75 kg.

The straight line assumes maintenance is frozen for the entire projection, which means it always runs ahead of reality, and the gap widens the longer the projection runs.

Kevin Hall and colleagues quantified this in The Lancet in 2011 with a dynamic model, and their rule of thumb for a permanent intake change is roughly 0.45 kg of eventual change per 10 kcal a day, with about half of it realised in a year and most of the rest over three. Taken literally, a 500 kcal deficit sustained for a full year would be 23.7 kg on the straight line, and nobody loses that.

The formula, worked line by line

The arithmetic is two divisions built on one constant. Multiply the daily deficit by seven and divide by 7,700 to get a weekly change in kilograms; multiply the total weight change by 7,700 and divide by the daily deficit to get days.

The constant comes from Max Wishnofsky, writing in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition in 1958, who reasoned that a pound of adipose tissue is roughly 87 percent fat, and that fat carries about 9.5 kilocalories per gram, arriving at approximately 3,500 kilocalories per pound. In metric that is 7,700 per kilogram, though the exact conversion of 7,700 is 3,493 per pound.

Nearly seventy years later that number is still the default in consumer weight tools, and it is still a straight line drawn through a curve. It treats the energy cost of a kilogram as constant and, more importantly, treats maintenance calories as if they were fixed for the whole duration of a plan. Neither holds. What follows is the arithmetic, then a plain account of where it departs from what happens.

The one percent rail for an 85 kg body sits at 0.85 kg a week, so this plan is well inside it. Double the deficit to 1,000 kcal and the same journey takes 77 days at 0.91 kg a week, which crosses the rail and is flagged, and the implied intake of 1,500 kcal would also fall below a resting metabolic rate of around 1,700.

Now the honest part. Those 154 days are an underestimate of how long it will actually take, and the reason is structural rather than a matter of willpower. A deficit is defined relative to maintenance, and maintenance falls as body mass falls: less tissue to keep warm, less mass to move, a lower resting metabolic rate.

Kevin Hall and colleagues modelled this dynamically in The Lancet in 2011 and proposed a replacement rule of thumb: a permanent change of 10 kilocalories a day leads to an eventual change of roughly 0.45 kg, with about half of that realised within a year and the great majority within three.

Applied literally, the straight line says a 500 kcal deficit held for 365 days removes 23.7 kg, and nobody observes that. Expect the real curve to track the line early and fall behind it steadily.

The rate rail matters more than the timeline. Weight lost faster than roughly 1 percent of body weight a week comes disproportionately from lean tissue rather than fat, and lean tissue is what maintains resting metabolism, which makes fast loss self-defeating in the medium term.

Garthe and colleagues, writing in the International Journal of Sport Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism in 2011, compared athletes losing at about 0.7 percent of body weight per week against about 1.4 percent and found the slower group retained lean mass better while both reached similar body-fat outcomes. Public guidance sits in the same territory: the United Kingdom National Health Service advises aiming at roughly 0.5 kg to 1 kg a week.

This tool therefore reports a fast plan as aggressive and reports an intake below resting metabolic rate as a flag, but it does not refuse to calculate, because the number is information and you are an adult. Everything here is general information rather than medical advice, and a plan involving a substantial deficit, a medical condition, a pregnancy, or any history of disordered eating belongs with a doctor or a registered dietitian.
