The fertile window is the five days before ovulation plus ovulation day itself: six days. Sperm survive up to about 5 days in fertile cervical mucus; the egg lasts around 24 hours. On a 28-day cycle starting 1 March 2026, ovulation is estimated for 15 March, the window runs 10 to 15 March, and the peak is 14 March.
These are estimated dates from calendar arithmetic, not a detected ovulation. This is a planning aid and general information, never a method of contraception and never medical advice.
How to use the ovulation calculator
Enter the first day of your last period and an average cycle length, and the tool projects the estimated ovulation date, the six-day fertile window around it, the peak day, and the start of the next period, for as many future cycles as you ask for.
On a 28-day cycle beginning 1 March 2026 it estimates ovulation on 15 March, a Sunday, with the fertile window running 10 March to 15 March, the peak day on 14 March, and the next period due 29 March. Project three cycles forward and the same pattern repeats at 28-day spacing: ovulation on 12 April, then 10 May. Every date is an estimate produced by counting days, not a detection of anything happening in your body.

The shape of the fertile window is the part worth understanding, because it is asymmetric and the asymmetry is the whole point. It opens five days before ovulation and closes on ovulation day itself, which gives six days.
The reason is that the two cells involved have very different shelf lives: sperm can survive up to about five days in fertile cervical mucus, waiting, while the egg is viable for roughly 24 hours after release.
Allen Wilcox, Clarice Weinberg and Donna Baird established this in the New England Journal of Medicine in 1995, following 221 women trying to conceive across 625 menstrual cycles, in which 192 pregnancies were initiated. Conception occurred only when intercourse fell within that six-day interval ending on the day of ovulation, and never afterwards.
Ovulation here is counted backwards from the next expected period rather than forwards from the last one, and that is a deliberate choice about which half of the cycle to trust. The luteal phase, from ovulation to the next period, is the steadier half, usually about 14 days.
The follicular phase, from the period to ovulation, is the part that stretches and shrinks, which is why longer cycles mean a longer wait for ovulation rather than a longer wait afterwards.
On the same 1 March 2026 start, a 21-day cycle puts ovulation on cycle day 8, on 8 March, while a 35-day cycle puts it on cycle day 22, on 22 March: a fortnight apart from the same starting date. Do
- Enter the first day of bleeding, which is day 1 of the cycle.
- Average your cycle length over several cycles before entering it.
- Leave the luteal phase at 14 unless charting has given you your own figure.
- Read the whole six-day window rather than the ovulation date alone.
- Read the peak day as the day before ovulation, not the day after.
Don't
- Read the window as opening at ovulation, when it closes there instead.
- Treat a positive predictor test as the window opening, since the surge precedes ovulation.
- Assume ovulation falls on day 14, since a 35-day cycle puts it on day 22.
- Use these dates as contraception, because a window drawn from an average cannot say which days are safe.
- Rely on a projection when your cycles vary by more than a few days.
The fertile window at different cycle lengths, worked from a period beginning 1 March 2026 with a 14-day luteal phase. Ovulation is counted back from the next expected period, so it moves one day later for every day of cycle length: cycle day 8 on a 21-day cycle, cycle day 22 on a 35-day cycle. The window is always six days and always ends on ovulation day, and the peak day is always the day before.

How cycle length slides the window
Change the cycle length and the whole pattern slides. At 21 days, ovulation lands on cycle day 8, which is 8 March 2026, with a window of 3 to 8 March. At 35 days it lands on cycle day 22, which is 22 March, with a window of 17 to 22 March.
Change the luteal phase instead and it slides the other way: on a 28-day cycle, a 10-day luteal phase puts ovulation on cycle day 19, which is 19 March, while a 16-day luteal phase puts it on cycle day 13, which is 13 March. That is a six-day swing from a six-day difference in the input, which is why the luteal field should stay at 14 unless you have measured your own.
Read it: Longer cycles mean a longer wait for ovulation rather than a longer second half, so the estimate moves one day later for every extra day of cycle length.

Two ideas carry all of the arithmetic. The first is that ovulation is located by counting backwards from the next expected period, not forwards from the last one, because the luteal phase is the stable part of the cycle and the follicular phase is the elastic part. The second is that the fertile window is asymmetric, opening five days before ovulation and closing on ovulation day, because sperm can wait and the egg cannot.
Together they mean the answer is set by two inputs and not one. Cycle length moves ovulation later or earlier day for day. Luteal phase length moves it in the opposite direction, day for day: a longer luteal phase places ovulation earlier in the cycle, because the same next period is being counted back from further away. Leave the luteal figure at 14 unless charting has given you a personal number.

Ovulation falls on cycle day 15 because day 1 is the first day of bleeding. Project forward and the second cycle starts 29 March with ovulation on 12 April, and the third starts 26 April with ovulation on 10 May.
The honest limits, and they are wide. This is an average projected onto a future cycle, and real cycles vary. Wilcox, Dunson and Baird reported day-specific estimates in the BMJ in 2000 and found that only about 30 percent of women had their fertile window fall entirely within cycle days 10 to 17, the range clinical guidance had long assumed, with substantial variability even among women reporting regular cycles.
Stress, illness, travel, weight change, thyroid conditions and polycystic ovary syndrome all shift ovulation, and recent hormonal contraception or breastfeeding can suppress it. Signs from your own body beat a projection: fertile cervical mucus turning clear and stretchy, a positive ovulation predictor test, or a sustained temperature rise, which confirms ovulation only after the fact.
