Four US cups is exactly 2 pints, because a pint is two cups. Four cups is also one US quart and 946.35 millilitres. The doubling is a definition rather than a rounding, so the answer stays exact at any number of cups: 3 cups is 1.5 pints, and 5 cups is 2.5.
A British imperial pint is 2.402 US cups, so a recipe converted for a UK pint container will not fill it.

The formula, worked line by line
The conversion divides by two, and the two is a definition. A US liquid pint is 16 fluid ounces and a cup is 8, both descended from the US liquid gallon of exactly 231 cubic inches. The relationship between them was declared rather than measured, so it carries no error.

Every difficulty on this page therefore comes from outside the arithmetic: which pint the recipe means, what size containers exist, and how much room a liquid needs when it freezes. The division itself is the least interesting part of the answer.

Four cups is also exactly one US quart, which is 946.35 millilitres. That is about 5.67 percent short of a litre, so a recipe calling for four cups and a shopper holding a one-litre carton are not quite talking about the same quantity.
Why the ladder never produces an ugly number
Every rung of the US liquid system is a whole multiple of the one below: 8 fluid ounces to the cup, 2 cups to the pint, 2 pints to the quart, 4 quarts to the gallon. Halving and doubling covers the entire ladder, which is why American recipes scale without a calculator.

One quantity, four correct names. Which one a recipe uses says more about the size of the batch than about the measurement.
Freezing changes the useful capacity
Water expands as it freezes, so a container rated at one pint does not hold a pint of liquid that is going to be frozen. Leaving roughly a tenth of the container empty is the standard allowance, which means a pint tub safely holds a little under two cups rather than exactly two.
How to use the cups to pints converter
A US liquid pint is two cups, so converting cups to pints is a halving. Both units are whole multiples of the fluid ounce — 8 to the cup and 16 to the pint — so the ratio is exact by definition and the answer never carries a rounding error of its own, at any quantity.
The reason to convert is almost always containers. A recipe measured in cups has to be stored, frozen, transported or bought in vessels sold by the pint. Knowing that six cups of stock is three pints turns a measuring problem into a shopping list without any arithmetic beyond dividing by two.

Containers do not come in fractions, which is where the practical decision lives. Three cups is 1.5 pints, so it needs two pint containers with one half empty, or a single quart container two thirds full. Neither is wrong; the question is what you have and what it has to fit into.
The measure also sits inside a tidy ladder. Two cups make a pint, two pints make a quart, and four quarts make a gallon, so every step from the cup upward is a doubling except the last. That is why an American recipe scales up and down without ever producing an awkward number.

Buying and storing by the pint
A recipe in cups and a shop selling in pints are two different granularities, and converting between them is mostly about rounding up. Anything that is not a whole number of pints means either buying an extra container or stepping up a size, and which is better depends on whether the surplus keeps.
Stock and broth are the common case because they freeze well and get used in cup quantities. Six cups is exactly three pints, which portions neatly. Five cups is 2.5, which either wastes half a container or gets frozen as two pints plus a cup, and the second option is usually the one that survives contact with a real kitchen.

The freezer case is the one that catches people out. A pint tub filled to its mark with liquid has no room to expand, and stock frozen to the brim lifts its own lid. Portioning into more containers than the arithmetic strictly requires is the fix.
None of this changes the conversion, which stays a simple halving. It changes what you do with the answer, which is the part a bare number cannot tell you and the part that decides whether the batch is usable a month later.
Three things called a pint
This page converts to the US liquid pint of 473.18 millilitres, which is what an American recipe means. Two other pints exist and both turn up in kitchens. The US dry pint, used for berries and produce sold by volume, is 550.61 millilitres. The British imperial pint is 568.26.
The dry pint is a genuinely separate unit rather than a variant. NIST Handbook 44 gives it as 33.6003125 cubic inches against the liquid pint of exactly 28.875, making it 16.36 percent larger, and federal container-labelling rules keep the dry and liquid systems formally apart.

Only the first converts to a whole number of cups. The other two share the name and nothing else.
The imperial pint is the one most likely to appear in a recipe, since British cookbooks still use it for milk and cream. Treating it as two US cups leaves you about four fluid ounces short. Where a British recipe gives a metric figure alongside, that resolves it without any conversion at all.
