The formula
The mile is defined as exactly 1.609344 kilometres, a consequence of the 1959 international agreement that fixed the yard at exactly 0.9144 m, and with it the foot at 0.3048 m and the 5,280-foot mile at 1,609.344 m. Converting a speed uses the same exact number, because the hour is identical on both sides of the equation and cancels out entirely. What is being converted is only the distance.
The reciprocal, 0.62137119223733…, does not terminate, which is why every published mph value in a metric table is a rounded one. The underlying relationship is exact even though its decimal form is not, so the right habit is to divide by 1.609344 rather than multiply by a truncated 0.6214.

That is the national road limit in Ireland, the daytime motorway limit in the Netherlands, and the standard freeway limit across much of Canada and Australia, and it sits neatly between the US 55 and 65 mph limits. Do the same for the top of the range and 250 ÷ 1.609344 = 155.34 mph, the origin of the limited to 155 mph line in US road tests.
The five-over-eight shortcut is 0.625 against the true 0.621371, so it sits 0.58 percent high: 80 km/h gives 50 mph against a true 49.71, and 130 gives 81.25 against 80.78. It slightly overstates your speed, which is the safe direction to be wrong when you are judging yourself against a limit. The blunter multiply-by-0.6 runs 3.4 percent low, and at 130 km/h that hands you 78 mph against a real 80.8 — use it to sanity-check an order of magnitude, never to decide whether you are speeding.
One caution when you convert a dashboard reading rather than a sign. Under UN Regulation 39, the type-approval standard the EU and UK follow, an indicated speed may never be lower than the true speed, and at approval it may exceed it by up to 10 percent plus 4 km/h. So a dial showing 130 km/h can correspond to a true speed nearer 114 km/h, which is 71 mph rather than 81. Convert signs to know the limit, convert GPS or a corrected figure to know your actual speed, and do not mix the two.
How to use the km/h to mph converter
Kilometres per hour arrive in front of a US reader two ways: on a road sign in a country you are visiting, and on a spec sheet for a car that was engineered in metric. Either way the number means nothing until it is in mph. The conversion uses the exact factor rather than a rounded one, which matters at the top of the range: a rule of thumb that is fine at 50 km/h drifts by more than a mile per hour by the time you reach a 250 km/h limiter figure.
The road-sign set is short enough to learn outright. 30 km/h is 18.6 mph, the slow-zone speed signed in Swiss towns alongside the 50 default. 50 km/h is 31.1 mph and is the built-up default in Ireland, France, Italy, Germany, Poland and the Netherlands. 60 km/h is 37.3 mph, which is what Ireland now posts on local roads under the Road Traffic Act 2024. Then 80 km/h is 49.7 mph, 100 km/h is 62.1 mph, 120 km/h is 74.6 mph, and 130 km/h is 80.8 mph, which is the motorway ceiling in France, Italy, Austria and Denmark. Poland tops the European table at 140 km/h, or 87.0 mph.
Car specs are the other half of the job. Every European and Japanese manufacturer quotes acceleration as 0 to 100 km/h, which is 0 to 62.1 mph, so a published 0 to 100 figure is always a slightly longer run than the US 0 to 60 benchmark and therefore a slightly slower number for the same car. Top speeds follow the same rule. The 250 km/h electronic limiter that German manufacturers have long applied by voluntary agreement is exactly the limited to 155 mph you see in US reviews, since 250 km/h is 155.34 mph. Power figures work the same way at one remove: metric horsepower, or PS, is about 98.6 percent of a mechanical horsepower, so a 400 PS car is quoted near 394 hp.
For mental math, multiply by 5 and divide by 8. That is 0.625 against a true 0.621371, so it reads 0.58 percent high and is close enough to be functionally exact: 100 km/h gives 62.5 against 62.1, and 130 gives 81.25 against 80.8. Because it overstates, it errs in the safe direction when you are judging yourself against a limit. The blunter multiply-by-0.6 trick runs 3.4 percent low, which understates your speed by more than two mph at motorway pace, so keep it for gut checks only. And remember which number the law cares about: a camera measures your true speed, while your dashboard, under UN Regulation 39, is permitted to read up to 10 percent plus 4 km/h high.
