After half an hour at the same speed, the distance is 25 nautical miles, while the speed remains 50 knots. Time links the quantities but does not make them interchangeable.

Why a knot can never be a distance

Speed answers how quickly position changes; distance answers how much ground or water has been covered. The knot includes both a distance unit and a time unit in its definition, just as mph does. Removing “per hour” changes the quantity from speed to a nautical-mile distance.

The distance changes in direct proportion to time while speed stays constant. Real passages need allowances for changing speed, current, routing and conditions, but the unit relationship remains the same.

This also explains why “50 nautical miles per hour” and “50 knots” are equivalent descriptions, while “50 nautical miles” is not. The first two specify a rate. The third specifies only distance and contains no information about whether the trip took minutes, hours or days.

The abbreviation kn is enough after a number. The word knot may be plural in ordinary language, but the unit symbol does not change. United States operating rules generally prohibit indicated airspeed above 250 knots below 10,000 feet mean sea level unless the Administrator authorises otherwise.
