The formula, worked line by line

Nobody is being misled: 26.2 is a name, not a measurement, and the course is measured in metres. It is worth knowing only if you are converting a pace target and wondering why the arithmetic lands slightly short.
The nautical mile is not this mile
A nautical mile is exactly 1,852 metres, about fifteen percent longer than the statute mile on this page. It was built from the earth rather than from a yardstick, approximating one minute of latitude, and it survives in aviation and at sea because that link to navigation is useful.

Why the factor stops after three decimals
A conversion between two systems that grew up independently has no reason to produce a tidy number, and yet 1,609.344 terminates neatly. That is because the relationship is not a measurement. In 1959 an agreement between six countries defined the yard as exactly 0.9144 metres, and every imperial length in common use follows from it by simple multiplication.

The same agreement fixes the foot at 0.3048 m and the inch at 25.4 mm. Every one of those figures terminates for the same reason: somebody chose them, rather than a laboratory finding them.
Before 1959 there was no single answer. Different countries maintained slightly different yards, and converting between imperial and metric meant knowing whose yard you had. The agreement did not discover a better value; it removed a question by deciding it.
The two American miles that existed until 2022
The 1959 agreement left one exception in place, and it survived for sixty-three more years. American surveying kept an older foot, the US survey foot, defined as 1,200 divided by 3,937 metres. It differs from the international foot by about two parts in a million, which is nothing over a room and roughly 3.2 metres over a hundred miles.
That exception ended. NIST and the National Geodetic Survey deprecated the US survey foot on 31 December 2022, and from 1 January 2023 the international foot is the single definition for all applications in the United States. The decision was published in the Federal Register in October 2020 to give surveyors two years of notice.
