Why the mile has an exact metric value at all
Two measuring systems that developed separately have no reason to line up neatly, so an exact conversion between them looks surprising. It exists because the relationship was decided rather than discovered. In 1959 six countries agreed to define the yard as exactly 0.9144 metres, and every common imperial length now follows from that by multiplication.

This is the part that surprises people: the foot, the inch and the mile are all now defined by reference to the metre. The imperial system did not resist metrication so much as get absorbed by it at the level of definitions.
