Why 1.6 km is a shortcut, not a value

A mile is 1.609344 km, so the familiar 1.6 runs about 0.58 percent short — roughly nine metres per mile. It is an excellent mental approximation and has no place in anything recorded, where the exact figure costs nothing to carry.

Which mile you mean is the one genuine ambiguity. The statute mile is used on land in the United States and the United Kingdom. The nautical mile, defined to approximate one minute of latitude and now fixed at exactly 1,852 metres, is used at sea and in the air, where a knot is one nautical mile per hour.

The other famous case is usually told wrong too. Air Canada Flight 143 ran out of fuel in 1983 not because pounds were loaded instead of kilograms as such, but because a density figure of 1.77 pounds per litre was used as though it were kilograms per litre. The correct density was about 0.803 kg per litre, and the aircraft received roughly a quarter of the fuel it needed.

The nautical mile was designed to approximate one minute of latitude, which is why it belongs to navigation. It is now a fixed metric quantity rather than an astronomical one.

The US survey mile was based on the slightly longer survey foot and ran about 3.2 millimetres longer per mile. It was deprecated along with the survey foot at the end of 2022, so for anything measured since then there is one statute mile, and survey-based values are a legacy-data concern rather than a live choice.

What the famous unit failures actually were

Both stories are told as parables about imperial versus metric, and both are more specific and more useful than that. Neither was a failure to know a conversion factor. Both were failures to keep a unit attached to a number as it crossed a boundary between systems, teams or documents.

In the Mars case the spacecraft software was correct and a ground file violated its own interface specification. In the aircraft case the arithmetic on the dripstick readings was right and the density factor was wrong. In both, review processes did not catch a plausible-looking number.
