The formula, worked line by line
One multiplication by an exact power of ten, and one question to ask first: how many dimensions does the quantity have? Length takes the factor once, area twice, volume three times. That question is the only thing on this page that can actually go wrong.

The binary distinction matters wherever storage and data rates are quoted. A kilobyte in the SI sense is a thousand bytes; the 1,024-byte quantity is a kibibyte, symbol KiB. The prefixes were separated precisely because the same word was doing two jobs and the gap widens at every step up.

The familiar 26.2 miles is a rounding of 26.2188. Runners quote it to one decimal, which is about 30 metres of slack — nothing over a marathon, and enough to matter if you tried to lay out a course from it.
Why the metre no longer lives in a vault
The metre was once a bar of platinum-iridium held near Paris. It is now defined by fixing the speed of light in vacuum, so any properly equipped laboratory can realise it independently rather than by comparison against an object that could be damaged, lost, or slowly drift.

A one-line check that catches most direction errors: metres are smaller than kilometres, so there must be more of them. If the number shrank, the operation was backwards.
How to use the kilometers to meters converter
Multiply by a thousand. Kilo- is defined as exactly ten to the third, so the conversion is exact and the decimal point simply moves three places. There is nothing to round and no alternative value anywhere, which is the entire design intent of the metric system.
Two things do go wrong, and neither is the arithmetic. The first is dimensionality: the moment the quantity becomes an area or a volume, the factor is squared or cubed. A square kilometre is a million square metres. A cubic kilometre is a billion cubic metres. Applying the linear thousand to an area is out by a factor of a thousand.

The second is compound units. Kilometres per hour to metres per second is not this conversion at all: the distance unit divides by a thousand and the time unit divides by 3,600, so the combined factor is 1,000 over 3,600, or one over 3.6. Treating it as a simple thousand gives an answer 3.6 times too large.
Race distances are the other reason people land here, and they are worth stating exactly because they are deliberately not round. A marathon is 42.195 km — 42,195 metres — and a half marathon is exactly half that, 21.0975 km or 21,097.5 metres. The half metre is why the distance is usually quoted in metres rather than kilometres.

When the factor is not a thousand
A conversion factor applies to a length. The moment the quantity has more than one dimension, the factor comes along once per dimension. This is obvious when stated and invisible in practice, because the units look almost the same and the arithmetic offers no warning at all.

The same applies at every scale. A square metre is 10,000 square centimetres because a hundred squared is ten thousand, and a cubic metre is a million cubic centimetres. Floor areas are where this trips people most often.
Compound units need the same care in a different way. Kilometres per hour to metres per second changes both the numerator and the denominator, so the factors combine rather than replace each other. Dividing by 3.6 is the shortcut; understanding that it is 1,000 over 3,600 is what stops you reaching for it in the wrong situation.
The distances that refuse to be round
Most standard race distances are round in metres because they were defined in metres. The marathon is the exception, and its awkward 42.195 km is a historical accident that was later fixed as the official distance rather than tidied up. Quoted in metres it is 42,195 — a whole number, which is why the metre is the better unit for it.

The half marathon is exactly half the marathon, which is why it lands on a half metre. Rounding it to 21,098 m would break that relationship.
The track figure deserves a caveat that most sources skip. A 400-metre track is 400 metres along the measurement line in lane one, which runs a set distance out from the kerb rather than along the inside edge. It is a nominal design length measured on a defined line, not a guarantee about the path any individual runner takes.
