When a decimal stone is the right answer

There is one case where the decimal is genuinely what you want, and that is arithmetic rather than speech. Averaging a set of weights, plotting a chart, or feeding a spreadsheet all work better with a single number, because stone-and-pounds is a mixed-radix format that no formula handles gracefully without being taken apart first.

The safe habit is to calculate in pounds throughout and convert to stone and pounds only at the point of display. The remainder is the whole job

A plain division by 14 answers a question nobody asked. It tells you how many stone the weight is worth as a quantity, when what you need is how the weight is named. Those are different outputs from the same arithmetic, and the difference is the part after the decimal point, which has to be converted back into pounds before it means anything.

The arithmetic is short. Divide, take the whole number, multiply the whole number back by 14, and subtract that from the original pounds. Whatever is left is the pounds figure, and it will always be somewhere between zero and thirteen. If it comes out at 14 or more, the whole-number step went wrong somewhere.

Half stones are the shortcut most people actually use, because seven pounds is easy to spot. Anything ending in 7 pounds is a clean half stone, so 147 is ten and a half, 161 is eleven and a half, and 175 is twelve and a half. Quarters are not used in speech, so there is no need to go finer than that.

Where a pounds figure comes from

Almost every pound figure a British or Irish reader meets has an American origin, because the United States is the only large country that quotes body weight in plain pounds. It inherited the same avoirdupois pound in the 1959 International Yard and Pound Agreement but never took up the stone, so an American scale simply shows 154 and stops there.

Software is a common source now. Fitness trackers, calorie apps and health sites default to US units unless told otherwise, and many of them will show pounds even after the locale is changed. Sport supplies the rest: boxing and wrestling weight classes, American football rosters, and gym plates cast in pounds rather than the metric plates used elsewhere.

One place the stone never appears at all is the very light end. Newborns in the UK and Ireland are weighed in pounds and ounces, so a baby is seven pounds eight rather than any fraction of a stone, and the unit only takes over somewhere above about two stone. Below that the stone is simply too coarse to say anything useful.
