The formula

The international foot has been defined as exactly 0.3048 meters since the 1959 agreement that fixed the yard at 0.9144 m. A square foot is therefore exactly 0.3048 squared, which is 0.09290304 m². There is no rounding hidden in that factor: it is a definition squared, and it terminates after eight decimal places rather than running on forever.

That is the whole rule for area conversion, and it generalises. Any area factor is the length factor squared, and any volume factor is the length factor cubed. Getting this wrong is the single most common mistake in unit work, because 3.28 and 10.76 are both correct numbers for the same pair of units and only one of them belongs in an area calculation.

Worked example with the default: 1,000 × 0.09290304 = 92.90304 m², displayed as 92.90 — a 1,000 sq ft apartment listed the way the rest of the world would list it. Work a room instead and a 12 ft by 14 ft bedroom is 168 sq ft, which is 168 × 0.09290304 = 15.61 m². For anything rectangular, multiply the two sides in feet first and convert the area once; converting each side to metres and then multiplying gives the same answer but rounds twice on the way there.

The squaring is also where measurement error hides. Because area is a length multiplied by a length, a percentage error in a dimension roughly doubles when it reaches the area: 1.1 squared is 1.21, so a 10 percent overestimate of a wall becomes a 21 percent overestimate of the floor. Cut the other way, a 5 percent short measurement understates the area by about 10 percent. This is why flooring and paint estimates go wrong far more often than the conversion does, and why it pays to measure twice before converting once.

One historical wrinkle that matters more for area than for length. Until recently the United States carried two definitions of the foot: the international foot at exactly 0.3048 m, and the US survey foot at 1200/3937 m, which is about two parts per million longer. Squared, that becomes four parts per million of area — invisible on a bedroom, but a 1,000-acre tract differs by about 16 m² depending on which foot was used. NIST and the National Geodetic Survey deprecated the US survey foot on 31 December 2022, and from 1 January 2023 the international foot is the single definition for all applications. This converter uses it.

How to use the square feet to square meters converter

Square feet is a US-and-a-handful-of-others unit. The moment your floor area has to travel — an international rental listing, a relocation package, an architect abroad, or the metric room planner every flat-pack furniture brand ships — it has to become square meters. Enter the square footage and this converter gives you the metric equivalent; Swap handles the return trip. The factor it uses is exact rather than approximate, because the international foot has been defined as exactly 0.3048 metres since 1959, which makes a square foot exactly 0.09290304 m². Nothing in the arithmetic is rounded, so a 340 sq ft studio and a 34,000 sq ft warehouse convert with the same fidelity.

At house scale the numbers are easy to anchor once you have a few in your head. A 400 sq ft studio is 37.16 m², an 800 sq ft one-bedroom is 74.32 m², a 1,000 sq ft apartment is 92.90 m², a 1,500 sq ft home is 139.35 m², and a 2,000 sq ft home is 185.81 m². Rooms shrink to numbers that look surprisingly small to an American eye: a 12 ft by 12 ft bedroom is 144 sq ft, or 13.38 m², and a two-car garage at 20 ft square is 400 sq ft, or 37.16 m². The cleanest anchor of all is that 1,076 sq ft is almost exactly 100 m², so dividing square footage by about 10.76 gets you there.

The trap is converting with the wrong factor. One meter is 3.28084 feet, and people reach for that number out of habit, but area needs it applied twice. One square meter is 3.28084 squared, or 10.7639 square feet, so a 1,000 sq ft flat is not 305 m². If your answer comes out roughly three times too big, you divided by the length factor instead of its square. The same trap has a subtler form worth knowing: an error in a length becomes a bigger error in an area, because it is squared along with everything else. Measure a room 10 percent long and you overstate its floor area by 21 percent, not 10, and for a volume the same slip becomes 33 percent.

For a fast estimate, divide the square footage by 10.8. That gives 92.6 m² for 1,000 sq ft against a true 92.90, about 0.3 percent low, which is far finer than anyone measures a room. The rougher multiply-by-0.09 version puts 1,000 sq ft at 90 m², roughly 3 percent low: good enough to decide whether a place is big, not good enough to order flooring. Then check what the original number actually measured. US listings usually quote gross area to the outside face of the walls, while French surface habitable, German Wohnfläche and similar standards count usable interior space and discount wall thickness, balconies and low-ceilinged areas. The same apartment can lose 5 to 10 percent crossing that line.
