The formula, worked line by line
One multiplication by a whole number, and a number chosen for how well it divides rather than for how well it multiplies. Everything below the yard in this system shares that property, which is the single best argument the customary units have in their favour.

Try the same layout from two metres. You get 200 centimetres, tiers of 66.67 centimetres, and a number you have to round before you can mark it. Neither system is wrong; they are optimised for different operations.
The fractions that do not work
Fifths, sevenths and elevenths of a yard give 7.2, 5.142857 and 3.2727 inches respectively. None of them appears in tailoring, which is the point: a unit only needs to divide well by the numbers its trade actually uses, and cloth is divided in halves, thirds and quarters.

How to use the yards to inches converter
Multiply by 36. The factor is exact — a yard is three feet and a foot is twelve inches, both fixed by definition rather than measurement — so a whole or simply fractional number of yards always gives a whole number of inches. That is not a coincidence, and it is worth understanding rather than just using.
Thirty-six is what mathematicians call a highly composite number for its size: it divides evenly by 2, 3, 4, 6, 9, 12 and 18. Compare that with a decimal-friendly alternative. If a yard had been set at 40 inches it would still halve and quarter cleanly, but there would be no whole-inch third and no whole-inch ninth. Thirds matter enormously in cutting cloth, because dividing a width into three panels or a length into three tiers is one of the most ordinary things a garment asks for.
The object that carries all this is the yardstick, marked to 36 and no further. Why the yard is 36 inches and not a rounder number
The yard was not built from the inch. It arrived as a unit in its own right — a length of cloth, a measuring rod, a standard held by a guild or a crown — and the inch was later fitted underneath it through the foot. Twelve inches to a foot and three feet to a yard is a duodecimal structure sitting under a unit that predates the arithmetic.

Fifths of a yard are almost never asked for. Thirds are constantly asked for. Whoever settled on 36 was optimising for the work rather than for the notation, which is a reasonable thing to have done in a world without calculators.
A popular story credits Henry I with fixing the yard as the distance from his nose to his outstretched thumb. It is a good story and there is no contemporary evidence for it. What the record does show is a long sequence of physical standards — rods and bars held as references — gradually converging, until the 1959 agreement replaced the whole lineage with a number: exactly 0.9144 metres.
That is the quiet significance of 1959. A unit that had been defined for centuries by an object became defined by a decision, and every relationship above and below it became exact in the same moment.
Where the inches actually get used
A sewing pattern specifies yardage on the envelope and everything else in inches. Seam allowances are given in fractions of an inch, commonly five eighths on commercial patterns and a quarter in quilting. Cutting layouts are drawn in inches against a bolt width in inches. The yard appears exactly once, on the shopping line.
So this conversion is the first thing that happens after buying and the last thing before cutting. Two and a half yards becomes 90 inches, which is what you lay out and mark against. Doing it in the other order — trying to reason about seam allowances in fractions of a yard — is how you end up with an allowance of one seventy-second of a yard and no idea what that looks like on cloth.

Fabric tapes are flexible by design and lengthen slightly under tension, and a length measured with a pulled tape will come up short when it is cut against a rigid yardstick.
