The formula, worked line by line
One division by a whole number, and the whole number is unusually well chosen. Thirty-six divides evenly by two, three, four, six, nine, twelve and eighteen, which is why so many fractions of a yard come out as whole inches and why the unit survived in a trade that cuts by eye.

Converting the finished 84 inches first would have given 2.3333 yards per drop and an instinct to buy five. The eighteen inches of allowances per drop are exactly the amount that decision would have been short by.
Why the inch and the yard both terminate in metric
Neither figure was measured. The 1959 agreement chose 25.4 millimetres for the inch because it was close to every existing national value and easy to write down, and everything above the inch follows by multiplication. That is why an inch is exactly 25.4 mm and a yard exactly 0.9144 m, rather than long decimals that trail off.

How to use the inches to yards converter

What makes this direction different from the arithmetic is that you rarely get to keep the answer. A fabric counter cuts in fractions of a yard, conventionally quarters, so 9 inches is the practical resolution rather than one inch. If your pattern needs 50 inches, the honest conversion is 1.3889 yards and the thing you actually ask for is a yard and a half, because a yard and a quarter is 45 inches and leaves you five short.

Round up, always, and round to the next cuttable fraction rather than the next whole yard. That single habit costs a few inches of cloth and saves the far worse outcome of a piece that will not yield the pattern, because fabric from a different bolt of the same product is not guaranteed to match on dye lot.
This is why comparing prices per yard between fabric types is close to meaningless without the width. Two bolts at the same price per yard can differ by a third in area. The number this converter gives you is one dimension of a two-dimensional purchase, and the other dimension was decided by the mill.

The fat quarter, and why it is not a quarter yard
Quilting shops sell a pre-cut called a fat quarter, and it causes more confusion than any other measurement in the trade. It contains the same area of cloth as a quarter yard and is a completely different shape, which for anyone cutting pattern pieces is the only thing that matters.

A plain quarter yard is a long thin strip nine inches deep. A fat quarter is a squarer piece. If your pattern needs anything longer than nine inches in one direction, the strip is useless and the fat quarter is not.
The plain version is sometimes called a skinny quarter for exactly this reason. Both are quarter yards by area and by price, and the fat quarter exists because quilters kept buying half yards and throwing half of them away.
The lesson generalises past quilting. When cloth is sold by the yard, the yard describes one edge of a rectangle whose other edge you did not choose. Any conversion from inches to yards answers a question about that one edge and stays silent about the rest.
Measure the drop, add the allowances, then convert once
A reliable way to end up short is to convert too early. Curtains are the clearest case: the finished drop is one number, and the cloth needed is that number plus a heading allowance at the top and a hem at the bottom, each of which may be doubled over. Converting the finished drop to yards and then adding "a bit" is how a project ends up an inch short of the windowsill.
Do the whole sum in inches. Finished drop, plus heading, plus hem, times the number of drops, plus a pattern repeat allowance if the fabric has one. Only then divide by 36 and round up to the next quarter yard. One conversion, at the end, with everything already in it.

Pattern repeat is the allowance people forget and the one that costs the most. A fabric with a large printed motif has to be cut so that the motif lines up across every panel, which can mean an extra repeat length on every drop after the first. On a big repeat that is easily an extra half yard per panel, and it is invisible in any arithmetic that starts from the finished size.
