The mixed notation is not archaic clutter. Racecourses are irregular loops, so a distance rarely lands on a round fraction, and quoting the remainder in yards is more precise than rounding to the nearest furlong would be.
Where 5,280 feet comes from
It is not an independent number. A mile is 1,760 yards and a yard is three feet, so the mile is 1,760 times three, which is 5,280. Anyone who has wondered why the foot count is so ugly is really asking about the furlong, because that is the unit the mile was made to fit.

Tenths of a mile appear on modern odometers and nowhere in the historical system, because the system predates any reason to divide by ten.
How to use the yards to miles converter

The reason 1,760 looks strange is that it did not come from the mile. It came from the furlong — the length of a furrow a team could plough before resting, standardised at 220 yards. English land had been recorded in furlongs and acres for centuries before anybody needed a mile that agreed with them.
The Roman mile of a thousand double paces was about 5,000 feet, which is seven and a half furlongs — an awkward fraction to write on a deed, and one that surveyors had no reason to tolerate.

So the mile was stretched. The 1593 statute settled it at eight furlongs, which is 1,760 yards or 5,280 feet, and the surveyors got a mile that divided cleanly into the units their maps already used. Everyone else got a number that has looked arbitrary ever since. It is one of the clearest cases in measurement of a unit being bent to fit the paperwork rather than the other way round.
That structure is why the old imperial track distances look the way they do. The quarter-mile race was 440 yards and the half-mile was 880, because those are exact fractions of a mile rather than round numbers in their own right.
When athletics went metric the 400 m and 800 m replaced them, and both are slightly shorter. A 440-yard lap is 402.336 metres, so the metric track is about two and a third metres short of the imperial one it succeeded.

Gunter's chain: the object that made 1,760 practical
A definition on paper is not much use to a man standing in a wet field, and the mile only became workable because someone built a tool that embodied it. In 1620 the English mathematician Edmund Gunter designed a surveying chain of 100 links, 66 feet long — which is 22 yards, exactly a tenth of a furlong and an eightieth of a mile.

That last line is the trick. An acre is 10 square chains, so a surveyor pacing out a field with the chain could read off the acreage without any conversion at all. The chain reconciled a decimal count of links with a thoroughly non-decimal system of land measure.
The chain is why so much of the American Midwest is laid out the way it is. The Public Land Survey System divided territory into six-mile-square townships and one-mile-square sections using Gunter chains, and the road grid that resulted still runs on mile intervals across several states. A section is 640 acres because a mile is 80 chains and 80 squared divided by 10 is 640.
The chain survives in one very visible place. A cricket pitch is 22 yards from wicket to wicket — one chain, measured out with the same tool, and never converted since.
Three things called a mile, and only one of them is this
The word does more work than it should. The statute mile on this page is 1,760 yards. The nautical mile is exactly 1,852 metres, roughly 2,025 yards, and was built to approximate one minute of latitude so that a navigator could read distance straight off a chart. They differ by about fifteen percent, which is far too much to ignore.
The third is historical but still turns up in old documents: the Roman mile, a thousand double paces, around 4,850 to 5,000 modern feet depending on whose reconstruction you trust. It is shorter than the statute mile by roughly a furlong, and that difference is precisely the gap the 1593 Act closed by rounding up.

That last point closed a genuinely odd chapter. Until 31 December 2022 the United States maintained a second, fractionally longer foot for surveying, which produced a survey mile about three millimetres longer than the international one. Over a single mile that is nothing. Across a state plane coordinate system it was enough to matter, and NIST and the National Geodetic Survey retired it rather than keep explaining it.
