The formula
Cups of rolled oats to grams is one multiply by 90 grams per cup:
grams = cups × 90Worked example: 1 cup × 90 = 90 g; ½ cup = 45 g; 2 cups = 180 g. The quick table covers ¼ through 2 cups.
This is rolled (old-fashioned) oats. Quick oats pack a little denser; steel-cut oats are roughly twice as heavy per cup (~180 g) and behave differently — don’t swap them by the cup.
How to use the cups of oats to grams
A cup of rolled oats is 90 grams — light and flaky, so a cup weighs less than you might guess. Enter cups for grams, or swap to convert grams back to cups. This page is for old-fashioned rolled oats, the most common kind in baking and oatmeal.
Oats are where the type matters as much as the amount, because the same grain is sold in shapes with very different densities. Rolled (old-fashioned) oats are steamed and pressed flat, trapping air, so a cup is about 90 grams. Quick oats are rolled thinner and chopped, packing a little denser. Steel-cut oats aren’t rolled at all — they’re the whole groat cut into hard pieces, so a cup weighs roughly twice as much, around 180 grams.
That means a recipe’s “1 cup oats” isn’t portable across types. Swapping steel-cut for rolled by the cup would nearly double the oats by weight and ruin the texture and liquid balance; they also cook completely differently (steel-cut want far more liquid and time). When a recipe doesn’t specify, rolled oats are almost always the intent for cookies, granola, and quick oatmeal.
Weighing sidesteps the whole type-and-density question for the amount, though you still have to use the kind the recipe wants for the right texture. For overnight oats and oatmeal, the ratio of oats to liquid is what you’re really managing, and grams make that consistent. These values use the 240 ml US cup.
