Cycle length varies between people and lengthens across a night, and nothing here measures your own. These are clock times derived from the cycle length you set, not a prediction about how you will feel. Anything about your sleep that worries you is a question for a clinician, not a calculator.

How do you work out what time to go to bed?

Count backwards from your alarm in whole sleep cycles and add the time you take to fall asleep. For a 07:00 alarm at 90 minutes a cycle with a 15 minute allowance, five cycles means 23:15 and six means 21:45. The 90 minutes is an average though: at 70 minutes those become 00:55 and 23:45.

Cycle length varies between people and lengthens across a night, so a bedtime from this page is arithmetic on an average rather than a prediction about how you will feel at the alarm.

How to use the sleep calculator

Tell the tool which time you know, enter it, and set two adjustments: how long you take to fall asleep, and how long you want to treat a sleep cycle as. It then counts whole cycles forwards or backwards from that anchor and reports the clock times they land on, wrapping across midnight where needed.

The page opens on a 07:00 alarm with a 15 minute allowance and a 90 minute cycle. That gives bedtimes of 21:45, 23:15, 00:45 and 02:15 for six, five, four and three cycles. Each is exactly 90 minutes from the next, which is the entire structure of the answer.

The fall-asleep allowance is the input people skip, and it is the one that is genuinely theirs. Counting back from an alarm, a longer allowance means an earlier bedtime, because you are budgeting more of the night for lying awake. Working forwards from a bedtime it pushes the wake times later instead.

All for a 07:00 alarm at 90 minutes a cycle. The shift is one for one: every extra minute of allowance moves the bedtime a minute earlier.

The cycle length slider is the honest part of the interface. Ninety minutes is a convention, not a constant, and moving the slider is the fastest way to see how much of a bedtime is measurement and how much is assumption. At six cycles the answer travels five hours across the published range.

Reading the results, the tool deliberately does not rank them. It has no idea how much sleep suits you, and a calculator that counted cycles is not the thing that could know. The four rows are four arithmetic results from one anchor, presented in order of length and nothing more.

Do

  • Enter the time your alarm is actually set for, not the time you would like to wake.
  • Switch the direction control first if what you know is your bedtime rather than your alarm.
  • Set the fall-asleep allowance to roughly how long you usually take, since it shifts every row.
  • Sweep the cycle length slider to see how far each answer moves across the published range.
  • Read the whole list of options rather than only the row at the top.

Don't

  • Read a bedtime as a boundary in the night, because the cycle length behind it is an average rather than yours.
  • Leave the allowance at zero unless you genuinely fall asleep the moment the light goes off.
  • Enter a bedtime while the direction control still says wake time, or every answer points the wrong way.
  • Assume a shorter row is worse or a longer row better, since this page ranks nothing.
  • Treat the four options as four recommendations, when they are four results from one piece of arithmetic.

How long a sleep cycle really is

The 90 minute figure is repeated so often that it has hardened into a rule. The published literature does not support a rule. It supports a range, and it says the range shifts within a single night.

The average length of the first NREM-REM sleep cycle is 70 to 100 minutes. The second, and later, cycles are longer lasting, approximately 90 to 120 minutes.

That is where the 70 to 120 minute range on the slider comes from, and it carries a second point worth noticing: cycles are not all the same length even for one person on one night. The first is typically the shortest and later ones run longer.

The composition changes too. The same chapter reports that in normal adults, REM sleep increases as the night progresses and is longest in the final third, while the deepest stages can disappear from the later cycles altogether. A cycle late in the night is not a repeat of the first one.

StatPearls, in its Physiology, Sleep Stages review, puts a complete cycle at roughly 90 to 110 minutes and a typical night at four to six of them. Different source, different phrasing, same shape of answer: a central figure with real width either side of it.

What this page will not tell you

This is a clock calculator. It counts intervals from a time you supply and reports where they land. There are several questions it cannot answer, and being clear about them is more useful than pretending otherwise.

It does not know how much sleep suits you. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine and the Sleep Research Society published a joint consensus recommendation in 2015 that adults sleep seven or more hours a night. That figure is theirs, it is stated here for attribution, and nothing in this tool uses it or applies it to you.

It does not measure anything about your sleep. No cycle boundary here was observed. The whole structure rests on a cycle length you selected from a published range, applied uniformly to a night the literature says is not uniform.

Just need the hours between two times?

If what you actually want is the gap between lights out and the alarm, in hours and minutes and in decimal form, that is a plain duration and there is a tool for it.

The formula, worked line by line

The arithmetic is subtraction on a 24 hour clock, and the only reason it needs writing down is the wrapping. Counting back from a morning alarm nearly always crosses midnight, and a naive subtraction produces a negative number of minutes rather than a time.

Everything is done in minutes past midnight. An alarm at 07:00 is minute 420. Subtract the sleep and the allowance, then wrap the result into the range 0 to 1,439 by adding a day whenever it falls below zero. Working forwards from a bedtime is the same operation with the sign flipped.

Because each option differs from the next by exactly one cycle, the results are always evenly spaced. That even spacing is what makes the list readable: you are looking at one interval repeated, not four separate calculations.

Five cycles is 90 minutes later at 23:15, four is 00:45 and three is 02:15. The double wrap in that last pair is why the tool marks which rows landed on the other side of midnight.

Why the spacing is exactly one cycle

Each option changes only the cycle count, so consecutive results differ by one cycle length and nothing else. The allowance appears identically in every row and cancels out of the gaps, which is why changing it slides the whole list without ever changing the spacing between rows.

That also explains the shape of the error. If your real cycle length is not the one you set, the discrepancy multiplies by the cycle count, so the row with the most cycles is the one carrying the most assumption. At six cycles a 20 minute misestimate becomes two hours.
