Eight tablespoons. One US stick of butter is 8 tablespoons, which is half a cup, which is 4 ounces, which is a quarter of a pound. So one cup is two sticks, and a full pound is four.
Those are not measurements anybody took. They are definitions: the stick was built as a quarter-pound block, and every other figure follows from that by division. It is the tidiest unit in American cooking, and it stays tidy until a recipe asks for a third of a cup.

Every row is exact by definition rather than measured, because the stick is defined as a quarter pound and the tablespoon as an eighth of the stick.
Two rows in that table are the ones people get backwards. A stick is half a cup, not a cup — and four sticks are two cups, not one. Both of those turn up in the questions Google shows alongside this search, which means enough people ask them for Google to have noticed.
Going the other way: tablespoons back to sticks
Recipes written in tablespoons are common, and the conversion back is where the second batch of confusions lives. Google shows "Is 12 tablespoons of butter 1 stick?" alongside this search, and the answer is no by half a stick.

Anything past 8 tablespoons has crossed into a second stick, which is the single most common place this goes wrong.
The gram figures in circulation do not add up
Almost every page on this subject prints two numbers: a cup of butter is 227 grams, and a stick is 113. Put them side by side and they contradict each other.

Neither figure is wrong on its own. Half a pound is 226.796 g and rounds up to 227; a quarter pound is 113.398 g and rounds down to 113. Round each separately and the halves stop making the whole.
This is the whole reason our converter carries 113.4 rather than 113. It defines the cup at 226.8 g and takes the stick as exactly half of it, so the ladder stays internally consistent all the way from a teaspoon to a pound. The cost is a decimal place. The benefit is that two sticks always make a cup.
For any real recipe the gram you gain or lose here is irrelevant — it is a fifth of a teaspoon of butter. It matters only when you are scaling something up, where rounding at every step compounds into a difference you can see.
Why a quarter pound in the first place
The stick is not an old unit. Butter was sold in blocks, pucks and rolls for most of American history, and the shape on the shelf today comes from a packaging decision made for distribution rather than for cooks.

Which is why every number on this page divides so cleanly. The quarter pound came first, the half-cup and the eight tablespoons were derived from it afterwards, and the wrapper markings were printed to match. American recipes then grew up around a unit that already had the arithmetic done.
It also explains the one figure that refuses to be tidy. The gram is not part of that system at all — it arrived later, from outside, and has been rounding awkwardly ever since.
The two stick shapes, which almost nobody mentions
Here is the thing that is genuinely useful and that not one of the pages currently ranking for this question covers. American butter sticks come in two different shapes, and which one you have depends on which side of the Rocky Mountains you buy it.

Both weigh exactly 4 ounces. Both are 8 tablespoons. The difference is entirely in how that butter is distributed along the wrapper, and it changes one practical thing: how long a tablespoon is.

So the same slightly-off knife cut costs you more on a Western stick than an Elgin one, because each tablespoon occupies a third less length. If you have moved between coasts and your butter suddenly seems to be behaving differently, this is why — and it is also why a butter dish bought in one half of the country often will not fit the sticks sold in the other.
The two shapes' volumes work out within about 1.5 percent of each other, which is the arithmetic confirming what the label already told you: it is the same quarter pound, in a different box.
The third of a cup the wrapper cannot show
Butter wrappers are printed with tablespoon lines, and those lines are why the stick is a good unit. They are also why the stick has exactly one blind spot.
A wrapper marks whole tablespoons, and usually quarter-cups alongside them. A third of a cup is not a whole number of tablespoons — and unlike most awkward fractions, this one is awkward in a way that has a clean answer.

The remainder lands on a whole teaspoon rather than some fraction of one, which is luck rather than design — ⅔ cup works the same way, at 10 tablespoons plus 2 teaspoons. If you have a scale, 75.6 g settles it without any of this.
The misread that costs you two thirds of the butter
Some butter wrappers print both teaspoon and tablespoon markings. If you read the wrong scale, the error is not small and it is not obvious — the stick still looks like it has been cut sensibly.

There is a thread on Reddit about exactly this that ranks on the front page of Google for the tablespoon question, which is a fair sign of how often it happens and how little the recipe sites address it. The check takes a second: a full stick is 8 tablespoons, so if your markings run past 8 to 24, you are looking at teaspoons.
Butter that does not come in sticks
Outside the United States, butter is sold in blocks with no markings at all, and a British or European recipe never says "one stick" because there is no such object on the shelf. The 250 g block is the common one, 500 g is sold alongside it, and pack sizes vary enough by country and brand that the number on your own wrapper is the one to trust.

Only the 8 oz block lands on whole units, because it is the same half-pound the stick system is built from. The metric blocks are close to a round number of cups and never quite on one.
That 250 g block is the one to watch. It is 1.1 cups, so treating it as a cup leaves you 10 percent short, and treating it as two sticks leaves you 10 percent over. A block cut in half is not a stick either — it is 125 g against the stick's 113.4.
Going the other way, an American recipe read in Europe wants 113.4 g per stick, and the practical move is to weigh rather than to cut. A 250 g block has no lines on it, and 17.6 tablespoons is not a thing you can eyeball.
The tablespoon itself survives the crossing intact, which is some comfort. Kerrygold, which sells the same butter as blocks at home and as sticks in America, prints one tablespoon as 14 grams on its US nutrition panel — a rounding of the 14.17 g the stick arithmetic gives.
Melted, softened, and whipped
Three states, and only one of them changes the arithmetic.
Softened butter is the same butter at room temperature. Nothing about the weight or the volume changes; the recipe wants it soft so it creams with sugar properly.
Melted butter weighs the same as the solid stick it came from, so if a recipe says "1 cup butter, melted", measure the cup first and melt it after. If it says "1 cup melted butter", measure after melting. The two phrasings are not the same instruction, and the comma is doing real work.
Whipped butter is the one that breaks. It is sold in tubs with air beaten into it, so a cup of whipped butter contains meaningfully less butter than a cup of stick butter. It is not a volume substitute for a stick, and no conversion chart will save you — weigh it, or use sticks for baking and keep the tub for toast.
