Grass seed is the rare home project where measuring carefully barely matters and picking the right number matters enormously. Pace off the lawn and you will be close enough — seed quantities are forgiving at the edges. What is not forgiving is the rate: the pounds you apply per 1,000 square feet. Get that wrong and you either waste half a bag or grow a thin, disease-prone stand that looks worse at week six than a correctly seeded lawn.

The rate is not a marketing number, and it is not the same for every bag on the shelf. It is set by seed size. A pound of tall fescue holds roughly 230,000 seeds; a pound of Kentucky bluegrass holds over 1.4 million.

A lawn needs a target number of seedlings per square inch, not a target weight, so the big-seeded species need three times the pounds to reach the same density. That single fact explains why "how much grass seed per 1,000 sq ft" has five different right answers.

The formula

Everything here is one line of arithmetic:

lbs of seed = (length × width ÷ 1,000) × rate × project factor

  • Measure length and width in feet and divide the area by 1,000, since every rate is quoted per 1,000 sq ft.
  • Multiply by the species rate (below).
  • Multiply by the project factor: new lawn = 1, overseeding = 0.5.

New-lawn rates, in lbs per 1,000 sq ft:

  • Tall fescue — 9
  • Perennial ryegrass — 8
  • Fine fescue — 5
  • Kentucky bluegrass — 3
  • Bermudagrass — 1.5

These are midpoints of US university extension-service recommendations for new lawns. Split odd shapes into rough rectangles and run each section separately — the same decomposition you would use to work out a gravel order for an L-shaped drive.

Why the rates differ so much

The six-fold spread between tall fescue and bermudagrass looks like a typo until you look at the seed. Bigger seed means fewer seeds per pound, so it takes more pounds to cover the same ground with the same number of plants.

That changes how you shop. A 20 lb bag of bluegrass covers nearly 6,700 sq ft; a 20 lb bag of tall fescue covers about 2,200. Price per bag tells you nothing; price per thousand square feet tells you everything.

New lawn or overseeding

The project select is the second lever, and it is a blunt one: it halves the rate.

Overseeding means spreading seed into an existing lawn to thicken it. The existing grass already occupies most of the soil contact a seedling needs, so full-rate overseeding just feeds birds and washes into the gutters. Half rate is what actually establishes.

New-lawn rate is for bare or nearly bare soil: a fresh grade, a renovation after killing off the old turf, or repair patches raked down to dirt.

The dividing line is roughly half the lawn. Overseed when the yard is thin but more than about half of it is healthy grass — mow short, rake or core-aerate, then seed at half rate and the new seedlings fill the gaps within a season. Start over when weeds and bare dirt dominate, when the existing species is simply wrong for the site, or when the grade itself needs fixing. Overseeding a 70%-weeds yard just grows grass between weeds.

A worked example

A 25 × 40 ft area is exactly 1,000 sq ft, the cleanest possible case:

  • Area factor: 1,000 ÷ 1,000 = 1.0
  • Tall fescue, new lawn: 1.0 × 9 × 1 = 9 lbs
  • Same area, overseeding: 1.0 × 9 × 0.5 = 4.5 lbs
  • Same area, Kentucky bluegrass, new lawn: 1.0 × 3 × 1 = 3 lbs

Three legitimate answers for one patch of ground, spanning 3 to 9 pounds. The grass-type select does the real work here; the tape measure does not.

Scaling up to a quarter acre

A quarter acre is about 10,900 sq ft, and at that size the species spread stops being academic:

At new-lawn rates that is roughly 98 lbs of tall fescue, 87 lbs of perennial ryegrass, 55 lbs of fine fescue, 33 lbs of Kentucky bluegrass, or 16 lbs of bermudagrass. Overseeding halves every one of those. At this scale, skip the small retail bags: buy 50 lb contractor bags and apply with a broadcast spreader in two perpendicular passes: half the seed north-south, half east-west. A single pass always streaks.

Timing beats quantity

You can nail the rate and still fail completely by seeding in the wrong month.

Cool-season grasses (tall fescue, Kentucky bluegrass, perennial ryegrass, fine fescue) cover most northern and transition-zone lawns. They establish best from late August through early October: warm soil, cooling air, fall rain, and a full season of root growth before summer stress. Early spring is the backup window, not an equal option.

Warm-season bermudagrass is the opposite: late spring through early summer, once soil reliably holds above 65°F.

Seed a cool-season lawn in June or bermuda in October and no rate will save it. Seed in the right window and these rates produce a full stand in one season.

Do not double it "for insurance"

Over-seeding a new lawn is a genuine failure mode, not extra credit.

Seedlings packed beyond the soil's light, water, and nitrogen budget compete with each other. They come up thin-bladed and weak, the canopy stays humid, and damping-off fungus thrives in exactly those conditions. University turf programs consistently find over-seeded stands thinner at maturity than correctly seeded ones.

If you want insurance, spend it on the two things that actually control germination: soil contact (rake the seed in lightly and roll it) and watering discipline (consistent moisture for the first two to three weeks). Both are free. Neither is a pound of seed.

Read the bag before you trust it

The rates in the calculator are extension-service midpoints. Your seed bag prints its own recommended range, and if it differs meaningfully from the preset, trust the bag — the blend, the cultivar, and the seed count are specific to that product.

Two more label habits worth building:

  • Buy to the nearest bag size at or above your number. 9 lbs means one 10 lb bag.
  • Check the pure-live-seed math: germination % × purity %. A bargain bag that is 30% inert filler and weed seed is not a bargain — you are paying for chaff and applying less real seed than the label weight suggests.

  • Using one rate for every grass type. Tall fescue and bluegrass differ by 3×.
  • Overseeding at the full new-lawn rate. Half of it never touches soil.
  • Doubling the rate for a thicker lawn. It produces a thinner one.
  • Seeding outside the species window. Enough on its own to cause total failure.
  • Buying on bag price instead of cost per 1,000 sq ft.
  • Skipping seed-to-soil contact. Broadcast seed sitting on thatch does not germinate.
