Pallets round up, on the assumption your farm sells whole pallets — some will break one or sell loose pieces, so it is worth asking. That rounding, not the waste slider, is usually what decides how much spare sod you end up with; on a small lawn it can be worth several times the waste allowance. Coverage per pallet is the farm’s number, not a standard: Mississippi State Extension gives 450 to 500 sq ft, Tennessee Extension about 50 sq yd, and Virginia Cooperative Extension 450 to 700. Prices are yours too — nothing here is quoted or assumed, so the costing stays blank until you enter what you were actually charged.

Multiply length by width, add about 5 percent for cuts, then divide by the square feet on one pallet. A 30 by 40 ft lawn is 1,200 sq ft, or 1,260 with the allowance, which takes three 450 sq ft pallets. Those pallets deliver 1,350 sq ft — 150 more than the lawn.
Pallets round up, and that rounding is usually a bigger effect than the waste percentage. Mississippi State Extension gives 450 to 500 sq ft per pallet and Virginia Cooperative Extension gives 450 to 700, so the coverage figure has to come from your farm.

Measure length and width in feet where the grass will actually go. Real yards are rarely one rectangle, so an L-shape or a side strip goes in other areas as square feet, and the patio, pool or beds inside your measurement come off in subtract hardscape. Then the page does the part that decides your bill. Sod is normally sold by the whole pallet, so a tool that answers 2.8 pallets has not finished the job — and the best-ranked calculator on this search does exactly that. The real order is three, and the third pallet is where the money goes. Some farms will break a pallet or sell loose pieces, so ask.

That 5 percent is sound advice and it is also, most of the time, not the number that decides your order. Rounding up to a whole pallet is a step, not a percentage, and steps behave strangely. Push the waste slider on the default lawn from 0 to 10 percent and the pallet count never moves off three.

Three settings, one answer. The allowance only changes what you buy on the setting where it crosses a pallet boundary, and then it changes it by a whole pallet at once.
Where the step really bites is small lawns, and it does not bite in the order you would expect. Overbuy is a sawtooth, not a curve: it spikes just past each pallet boundary and collapses just before the next one. A bigger lawn can genuinely cost you less waste than a smaller one.
Read it: A 500 sq ft lawn takes two pallets and gets 900 sq ft — 80 percent more grass than it has ground. An 800 sq ft lawn takes the same two pallets and overbuys by 12.5 percent.
At 450 sq ft per pallet and a 5 percent allowance. The 3,000 sq ft row is the flat spot: 3,150 sq ft to lay is exactly seven pallets, so nothing is wasted at all.
Read that chart backwards and it gives you a lever. If your lawn lands just over a boundary, extending the sodded area slightly is close to free — you have already bought the grass. A 500 sq ft yard has 375 spare square feet sitting on the driveway, which is a side strip or a parking-lawn edge you were not planning to do.

- Ask the farm what one pallet covers before you trust any pallet count.
- Read the leftover line, because that is the grass you pay for and do not lay.
- Subtract the patio, pool, shed and beds before you order, not after.
- Plan where spare sod goes before delivery day, while it is still alive.
- Book delivery for a day you can lay it, not a day it can sit.
Don't
- Order from a square-foot figure alone when the farm sells whole pallets.
- Assume the 450 sq ft pallet is a standard, since published ranges reach 700.
- Trust a tool that reports a fractional pallet, because no farm sells one.
- Move the waste slider hoping to shave the order down by a pallet.
- Stack a full pallet into a half-ton pickup on the strength of the price.
- Measure the whole yard as one rectangle when a driveway runs through it.
Whole pallets and the grass they deliver, at 450 sq ft per pallet with a 5 percent allowance. Read the last column down and the sawtooth is unmistakable: 600 and 900 sq ft both overbuy by half a lawn, while 1,200 and 2,400 sq ft — larger jobs — overbuy by 12.5 percent.

How long does sod keep on the pallet?
Shorter than the delivery window suggests, and the clocks start in different places. Clemson gives 48 hours from delivery. Tennessee and Virginia Tech both measure from harvest instead — 24 to 48 hours and eight hours respectively — which matters, because the sod was cut before it was loaded and the clock had already started when the truck pulled in.

This is the practical reason the overbuy figure matters more than it looks. Spare gravel keeps for years, spare tile keeps forever, and spare sod is dead by the weekend. Decide where the extra goes before the truck arrives, or the leftover on your order line becomes a stack of hay by the garage.
Why does every sod calculator give a different answer?
Because they hard-code the coverage, and the coverage is not standard. Mississippi State Extension publishes 450 to 500 square feet per pallet. Virginia Cooperative Extension publishes 450 to 700. Both are correct — it moves with grass type, cut thickness and how wet the sod is when it is stacked.

The last row is the counterintuitive one: bigger pallets drop the order from three to two and cut the waste at the same time. A calculator that assumes 450 would have sold you a pallet you did not need.

Coverage divided by piece size, rounded down — a pallet is stacked with whole pieces. The calculator prints this line for whatever pair you enter, which is why "how many pieces are in a pallet" has no fixed answer either.
So the coverage box on this page is an input with a default, not a constant. Fill in what the farm actually quotes and the pallet count is real. Leave it at zero and the tool prints square feet and pieces and stays silent about pallets, which is the honest answer when nobody has told it the one thing that decides them.
Why your sod costs more per square foot than you were quoted
Because the two rates measure different things. A farm quotes per square foot of sod, which is its price per pallet divided by what the pallet covers. You are buying square feet of lawn, and whole pallets always deliver more sod than the lawn has ground. The gap between those two rates is not a fee, a markup or a delivery charge. It is the rounding.
The relationship is exact, which makes it worth knowing before you ring round for quotes: your effective rate is the quoted rate multiplied by one plus the overbuy. So the sawtooth is a price curve as much as a quantity one.

At 450 sq ft per pallet and a 5 percent allowance, before delivery. The 500 sq ft row is paying nearly double the advertised rate — not because the farm did anything, but because the lawn sits just past a pallet boundary.
Nothing on this page assumes a price. Sod moves with region, grass type and season, so publishing a number would be inventing one — the costing block stays blank until you type what your own farm quoted, and delivery is counted once rather than per pallet.
The formula, worked line by line
The first line is the one every sod calculator runs, and it is ordinary area arithmetic with a percentage on top. Length times width gives the lawn, and the allowance turns it into the square feet that actually have to be cut and laid, edges included.
The second and third lines are where this tool diverges. Both counts round up, because a piece of sod and a pallet of sod are things you buy whole. That ceiling is not a formatting choice — it is the difference between a number you can order and a number you cannot.

Switch the piece size from the 10 sq ft roll to a 16 by 24 in slab and the same lawn becomes 472 pieces instead of 126 rolls. The pallet count does not move, because pieces and pallets are counted from the same square footage independently.
The last line is the one worth staring at. It measures the delivered sod against the bare lawn, not against the lawn-plus-allowance, because that is the comparison a person actually makes when the truck leaves and there is a stack of turf on the drive.
Measuring it the other way would flatter the tool. Against 1,260 sq ft the default job looks like 90 square feet of spare; against the 1,200 sq ft of grass you set out to cover it is 150, and 150 is the number you paid for.
One thing the arithmetic cannot do is tell you what a pallet covers, and that single input outweighs everything else here. Published ranges span 450 to 700 square feet, which is enough spread to change a three-pallet order into a two-pallet one on the same lawn.
The piece size is looser still, and not because nobody publishes one. Tennessee Extension gives slabs of 16 inches by 24 or more; Virginia Cooperative Extension describes rolls of approximately 10 square feet; Clemson names both formats and sizes neither.
