Kilo- is strictly a thousand. In computing the binary 1,024 has its own prefix, kibi-, precisely so the two cannot be confused.
Significant figures survive the conversion
A tape measure reading of 175 cm is good to the nearest centimetre. Converting it to 1.75 m keeps exactly that, and writing 1.750 m claims a millimetre of precision the tape never had. Conversions do not improve measurements, and the arithmetic will happily produce digits that mean nothing.

Four new prefixes arrived in 2022 — ronna and quetta at the top, ronto and quecto at the bottom — extending the range to ten to the thirty either way. They were added because data volumes and particle masses had run out of room, not as a curiosity.
The imperial comparison is usually made badly. It is often said that customary conversions are inexact — they are not. An inch is exactly 2.54 cm and a foot exactly 0.3048 m, both by international agreement since 1959. The real difference is that imperial ratios are awkward integers while metric ones are powers of ten.

Why metric conversions cannot be wrong
A conversion factor is either measured or defined, and the difference matters. A measured factor carries an uncertainty that improves as instruments improve. A defined factor has none at all, and cannot be revised by better measurement because there is nothing to measure.
Every prefix in the metric system is defined as an exact power of ten. So 1 cm equals ten to the minus two metres exactly, and 100 cm equals one metre exactly, in the same way that a dozen is exactly twelve. No experiment could refine that figure, and no authority could publish a better one.

The conversion is exact; the measurement is not. Adding zeros after converting is the commonest way to overstate precision, and it happens because the arithmetic looks like it justifies them.
The metre itself is no longer a physical object either. It is defined by fixing the speed of light, so it can be realised in any properly equipped laboratory rather than compared against a bar in a vault. The same move was made for the kilogram in 2019, using the Planck constant.
Writing metric units the way the standard says
The rules are short, published, and broken constantly — including in professional documents where the unit is the whole point of the sentence. They exist because a symbol is not an abbreviation: it is a defined mark, and altering it changes or destroys its meaning.

- Leave a space between the number and the symbol
- Keep symbols lower case unless named after a person
- Write the symbol unchanged in the plural
- Spell unit names in lower case, including metre and gram

- Write 175cm with no space at all
- Add a plural s to make 10 kms
- Capitalise it as Kg, which means nothing
- Add decimal places that the measurement never had
One rule genuinely varies by region rather than being right or wrong. US guidance recommends the dot as the decimal marker and thin spaces for grouping long numbers; international practice permits the comma as a decimal marker. So 1,5 m is not an error everywhere, though it is contrary to the US convention.

How do I convert 175 cm to meters?
