The formula, worked line by line
One division by an exact power of ten. Kilo- means a thousand by definition, so the factor cannot be improved on and no source disagrees with any other. What deserves attention is the unit itself rather than the arithmetic.

Reading it closely: the definition fixes a constant of nature, and the unit falls out of it. That is the same move that was made for the second and the metre, and 2019 was the point at which the last physical artefact left the system.

Half a kilo is about ten percent more than a pound, which is why recipes converted carelessly between the two come out heavy. The pound figure is exact rather than measured, so the discrepancy is entirely a matter of which unit the recipe was written in.
Choosing between grams and kilograms
The readable rule is to pick whichever unit puts the number between one and a thousand. Five hundred grams beats 0.5 kilograms; two kilograms beats 2,000 grams. It is the same instinct that governs every other prefix in the system, and it removes decimal points, which is where errors live.

Twelve percent is a large gap for units that share a name. Freight, shipping and commodity figures are worth checking for which ton is meant before any conversion at all.
How to use the grams to kilograms converter
Divide by a thousand. Kilo- is defined as exactly ten to the third, so the conversion is exact and there is nothing to round. As with every conversion inside the metric system, the arithmetic is a decimal shift and the only thing that can go wrong is choosing the wrong direction.
What makes this particular rung worth a page is that the kilogram is the exception in an otherwise uniform system. Every other SI base unit has a prefix-free name — the metre, the second, the ampere. The kilogram does not, and that has a practical consequence: prefixes attach to the gram, so a millionth of a kilogram is a milligram and never a microkilogram.

When the kilogram was redefined
by fixing the Planck constant
The redefinition is the other reason this unit has a story. Until 2019 the kilogram was the last SI unit still defined by a physical artefact: a platinum-iridium cylinder held near Paris, against which every other kilogram in the world was ultimately compared. If it had been damaged or drifted, the unit itself would have moved.
The pound is worth knowing alongside it, because the comparison is exact rather than approximate. A pound is exactly 0.45359237 kilograms, fixed by the same 1959 agreement that defined the yard. So 500 g is not quite half a kilogram more than a pound — it is 1.1023 pounds, and both figures are exact.

The tonne is a non-SI unit equal to exactly 1,000 kg. In strict SI notation the same mass is a megagram, symbol Mg, though almost nobody writes it that way.

The base unit that already has a prefix
It is a historical accident with a practical consequence. When the metric system was set up the gram was defined first and proved too small to be a convenient standard, so the kilogram became the base unit while keeping its prefixed name. The rest of the system had to accommodate that.

Stacked prefixes are not permitted anywhere in SI, so the workaround is to treat the gram as the stem even though the kilogram is the base unit. It is the one place the system is genuinely inelegant.
The case rule is worth repeating because it costs nothing and is broken constantly. Lower-case kg is the kilogram. Capital K is the symbol for kelvin, so Kg is not a sloppy kilogram — it is not a valid symbol at all. Symbols are defined marks rather than abbreviations, and altering the case changes or destroys the meaning.
What the 2019 redefinition actually did
It moved the kilogram from an object to a constant. The definition now fixes the Planck constant at exactly 6.62607015 times ten to the minus thirty-four joule seconds, and the kilogram follows from that together with the definitions of the metre and the second. Any suitably equipped laboratory can realise it independently.
