The 2.2 shortcut, measured

A kilogram is 2.2046 pounds, so the familiar 2.2 is 0.21 percent low. At a body weight of 70 kilograms it understates by about 0.32 pounds, which is well inside what a bathroom scale resolves. At a tonne it understates by roughly 4.6 pounds, which is not.

This converts a weight into a weight. A gram figure taken from a volume measure is not a weight at all unless the density is known: 236.59 millilitres of space holds about 120 grams of flour and about 340 of honey, and no conversion factor can bridge that without naming the ingredient.

When continental Europe went metric, several languages kept their word for a pound and attached it to 500 grams. German shops still price by the Pfund and French ones by the livre, both meaning half a kilogram. It is an informal usage rather than a legal unit, but it is completely ordinary in daily speech.

Translation is where it becomes a problem. A German recipe calling for ein Pfund of flour is asking for 500 grams. Rendered into English as a pound and cooked in an American kitchen, it becomes 453.59 grams, which is 9.28 percent less flour than the author intended.

The reliable tell is a metric figure printed alongside. Any recipe that gives both a pound and a gram number has settled the question itself, and where only a pound appears the country of origin is usually the only available clue.

Reading the remainder as ounces

A decimal pound is easy to calculate with and awkward to use. Birth weights, postal rates and butchery all want whole pounds plus a remainder in ounces, so a reading of 1.102 pounds has to be translated before it fits any form that asks for it.

The method is to keep the whole number as pounds and multiply the decimal by sixteen. For 500 grams that is 1 pound plus 0.102 times 16, which is 1.63 ounces, so it is written as 1 pound 2 ounces once rounded. The rounding is to the nearest ounce because that is the resolution the form expects.

Sixteen divides cleanly by two, four and eight, so quarters and halves of a pound give whole ounces. Metric quantities almost never land on those fractions, which is why a gram-to-pound conversion nearly always produces an ounce figure with a decimal on it.
