That is 453.59237 grams exactly. Sixteen ounces is also the size of a standard American package of butter, pasta or coffee, which is why a recipe calling for a pound of something so often means one package rather than a weighed quantity.
Where the decimals come from
Sixteen divides cleanly by two, four, eight and sixteen, so those fractions of a pound are whole ounces. Everything else produces a repeating or long decimal: one ounce is 0.0625 pounds and three ounces is 0.1875. That is why compound notation exists rather than being an old-fashioned habit.

Every one of these terminates, because sixteen is a power of two. It is the tenths that misbehave, which is the opposite of what a decimal scale suggests.
Rounding up is not the same as rounding
For shipping, insurance banding and anything else billed by weight class, the rule is usually to round up to the next whole unit rather than to the nearest. A parcel at 1 pound 1 ounce bills as two pounds. Converting to a decimal and rounding to nearest would give one, and would be wrong by a whole price band.

The compound form is what most real uses want. A scale reading 26 ounces is 1.625 pounds, which nobody writes down. Written as 1 pound 10 ounces it fits a shipping label, a recipe, a birth record or a postal form without further translation, and that is usually the point of converting at all.
That rounding rule inverts the usual advice about precision. Ordinarily an extra ounce is negligible; under a round-up billing rule it can be the most expensive ounce in the parcel, and the ounces figure matters far more than the pounds one when deciding what to take out.

Writing it as pounds and ounces
Almost every context that uses pounds prefers the compound form. Birth weights, postal rates, boxing classes, luggage allowances and butchery all express a weight as whole pounds plus a remainder, and a decimal reading from a digital scale has to be translated before it fits any of them.
The translation is simple in this direction. Divide the ounces by sixteen; the whole part is the pounds and the leftover ounces are the remainder. Twenty-six ounces gives one pound with ten left over, so it is written as 1 pound 10 ounces without any decimal appearing at all.

All four describe the same object. The decimal is the easiest to calculate with, the compound form is the easiest to write down, the gram figure is the easiest to check on another scale, and the billed figure is the only one that costs money.
Where the fractions are quarters this is invisible, because sixteen divides by four and 0.25, 0.5 and 0.75 of a pound are exactly four, eight and twelve ounces. It becomes visible with tenths, which is why a scale set to decimal pounds and one set to ounces often seem to disagree in the last digit.

The troy ounce is 9.71 percent heavier, and its pound contains only twelve of them rather than sixteen. That makes a troy pound 373.24 grams against the ordinary 453.59, so the troy pound is the lighter of the two even though the troy ounce is the heavier.

Only the first divides by sixteen into a pound. The second has its own pound and the third has no pound at all.
In practice the fluid ounce causes far more confusion than the troy one, because it turns up in kitchens rather than in bullion markets. A recipe giving an ingredient in ounces alongside grams means weight; one giving it alongside cups or millilitres means volume, and the two cannot be converted into each other without a density.
