The formula, worked line by line
This is the one calendar conversion with nothing to explain away. A year is twelve months, by construction rather than by measurement, so the division is exact at every quantity and no year length or leap rule enters into it.

The individual month lengths do the work of absorbing the leftover days, which is why February varies. The ratio to the year stays fixed regardless, and that is what this page converts on.

No decimal appears at any precision. This is the only conversion in the time family where that is true for an arbitrary input: 7 months is 0.5833 years exactly, 25 months is 2.0833 exactly, and so on down the line.
Do not route through days
Converting months to days and then days to years is a longer path that happens to work only because both averages were derived from each other. 30.436875 times 12 divided by 365.2425 is exactly 1, but any other month length breaks the identity, and a 31-day month routed that way gives 1.0185 years for twelve months.

The last two are what happens when a system assumes a fixed month length. Both are wrong by more than a percent, and the direct division avoids the question entirely.
A month in a contract is a date rule
Legal drafting does not define a month as a duration. It defines it as the corresponding date in the following month, with an explicit rule for what happens when that date does not exist — a month from 31 January usually resolves to 28 or 29 February rather than to 3 March.
How to use the months to years converter
A year is twelve months by definition, so this conversion is a division by twelve and carries no error whatsoever. It is the only place in calendar arithmetic where a unit divides evenly into the one above it, and that single fact explains most of where the month gets used.
Everything else about the month is untidy. It has four possible lengths — 28, 29, 30 and 31 days — and averages 30.436875. It does not divide into weeks. It is not a fixed number of hours. Only its relationship to the year is clean, and that is enough to keep it in service.

Finance leans on the month for exactly this reason. A loan term of 360 months is unambiguous in a way that thirty years is not, because every payment falls on a monthly boundary and there are precisely 360 of them. Converting the term to days would introduce a question nobody needs answered.
Medicine uses months for the same reason, particularly for infants, where a child is described in months until about two years and in years afterwards. The switch happens where the extra resolution stops being useful rather than at any calendar boundary.

The only clean ratio in the calendar
Look at what the calendar does not divide evenly. A year is 365.2425 days, so days do not fit. It is 52.1775 weeks, so weeks do not fit. It is 8,765.82 hours. Every unit below the month leaves a remainder against the year, and that remainder is what makes calendar arithmetic awkward.
The month is the exception, and it is an exception by construction rather than by nature. Twelve months make a year because the calendar was built that way, with the lengths of individual months adjusted to absorb the leftover days. February carries the adjustment, which is why it is the odd one.

The month absorbs the mess so the year does not have to. The price is that the month itself has no fixed length, which is a trade the calendar has been making since the Julian reform and which nothing has improved on since.
This is also why a "month" in a contract is defined by dates rather than by duration. A month from 31 January is a question with several defensible answers, and legal drafting handles it with an explicit rule rather than by counting days.
Where months beat years as a unit
For anything with a payment schedule, the month is the natural unit and the year is a summary. A 360-month mortgage has 360 events in it; calling it thirty years describes the span without describing the structure, and the structure is what the arithmetic operates on.
The same holds for interest. A monthly rate applied 360 times is not the same as an annual rate applied thirty times, because compounding happens at every payment. Anyone converting a term to years and then reasoning about it annually has quietly changed the problem.

None of these industries writes its terms in years, and all of them could. The month wins because it is the unit the payments actually land on.
For infants the argument is resolution rather than scheduling. The difference between a six-month-old and a nine-month-old is enormous and the difference between 0.5 and 0.75 years is not legible, so paediatrics keeps months until the extra precision stops mattering.
