Wallpaper is the one wall material where the math on the label is a lie. The roll says it holds 56 square feet; you will hang closer to 50, and if the paper has a big floral repeat you will hang 36. Nobody prints that number. It is the difference between finishing the room on a Sunday afternoon and standing in front of one bare corner, three weeks later, waiting on a reorder that will not match.

Two things cause almost every wallpaper shortfall. The first is treating printed square footage as usable square footage — it isn't, because every strip has to be trimmed at both ends to line the pattern up with its neighbor, and that trim is gone. The second is over-deducting for doors and windows, on the reasonable-sounding but wrong theory that a wall which is half glass needs half the paper. Both come down to the same three pieces: the wall-area takeoff, the yield table that actually governs your order, and the US single/double roll quirk that makes wallpaper look half its real price.

The formula

Wall area with standard deductions, divided by the usable yield of the roll format and pattern repeat you chose:

  • wall area = 2 × (length + width) × height − (doors × 21) − (windows × 15)
  • usable yield per single roll = 25 sq ft (no repeat) · 22 (repeat up to 12 in) · 18 (repeat over 12 in)
  • double-roll yield = single-roll yield × 2
  • rolls = wall area ÷ yield, rounded up to a whole roll

Only the last step rounds. Everything before it stays as a decimal, because rounding early is how a 6.02 quietly becomes a 6.

The first line is the standard wall takeoff — the same perimeter-times-height measurement that drives how much drywall you need for the same room. What makes wallpaper different is the second line.

Pattern repeat is the number that decides your order

A repeat is the vertical distance before the printed design starts over. Every strip has to be cut so its pattern aligns with the strip beside it — "drop matching" — and whatever you trim off the top and bottom to achieve that alignment is offcut. You do not get it back, and it does not stretch to cover the next wall.

That is why usable yield collapses as the repeat grows. No repeat or a random match keeps about 25 usable sq ft per single roll. Repeats up to 12 inches drop that to roughly 22. Big repeats over 12 inches — the florals and damasks people actually fall in love with — leave only about 18.

Take a 12 × 12 ft room with 8 ft ceilings: 384 sq ft of gross wall, minus a door (21) and two windows (30), leaves 333 sq ft. A random-match paper needs 333 ÷ 50 = 6.7 → 7 double rolls. A repeat up to 12 inches needs 8. A large repeat pushes it to 10. Same room, same walls, three different orders — a 43% swing driven by nothing but the pattern.

Single rolls, double rolls, and the pricing trick

US wallpaper is usually priced per single roll but sold as double rolls — one physical bolt holding two single rolls of continuous material. A standard 20.5-inch-wide double roll holds about 56 gross sq ft, which real-world hanging turns into roughly 50 usable sq ft, less once a repeat is involved.

A double roll is one bolt of about 56 gross square feet — roughly 50 usable — but the price you see is per single roll.

Two practical consequences. When you compare prices, double the listed per-single-roll price to get what the bolt actually costs. And when you order, count in double rolls, because that is the unit that arrives at your door. The calculator defaults to double rolls for exactly that reason; flip the Advanced setting only if a retailer genuinely sells singles.

A full worked example

A 12 × 10 ft room with 8 ft walls, one door and two windows:

  • Gross wall: 2 × (12 + 10) × 8 = 2 × 22 × 8 = 352 sq ft
  • Deductions: one door (−21) and two windows (−30) → 301 sq ft
  • No repeat, double rolls at 50 usable sq ft: 301 ÷ 50 = 6.02
  • Round up: 7 double rolls

Now change one variable. Put a large-repeat paper on the same walls and the yield drops to 36 usable sq ft per double roll: 301 ÷ 36 = 8.36 → 9 double rolls. Two extra bolts, for a room you measured identically.

That 6.02 is worth staring at. It is a rounding you cannot argue with — an 0.02-roll overage is still a full extra bolt. The upside is that the spare becomes your repair stock, from the matching batch, which is the only repair material that will ever blend invisibly.

Do not over-deduct for doors and windows

This is the classic way to come up one strip short. The instinct is to subtract the real opening area: a patio slider is a big rectangle of wall you are not papering, so surely you take all of it off?

No. Strips still have to be cut full length and pattern-matched around every opening. The paper you "save" above and below a window mostly leaves as matching offcuts, not as usable material for the next wall. The standard takeoff values — 21 sq ft per door, 15 per window — already account for the realistic savings. Use those and no more, even on a wall that is mostly glass.

The takeoff is the same one paint uses, but paint forgives what wallpaper does not: it has no pattern to match. Wallpaper's waste model belongs with tile, where pattern and layout dictate the cut waste.

Batch numbers are not optional

Wallpaper is printed in production runs — "batches" or "lots" — and ink color shifts slightly between runs. In your hand the difference is invisible. On the wall, seam to seam, it reads as a vertical color change under raking light, and there is no fixing it short of re-hanging.

So: buy every roll at once, and check on arrival that all the batch numbers match. Keep the leftover roll, and write the batch number somewhere you will find it in five years. Future repairs only match if they come from your run.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Using the roll's gross square footage instead of the usable yield — that is a 10%+ shortfall before the repeat even enters.
  • Ignoring the pattern repeat, or checking it after ordering. It swings a 12 × 12 room from 7 rolls to 10.
  • Over-deducting for openings. 21 per door, 15 per window, full stop.
  • Comparing per-single-roll prices against double-roll prices and thinking you found a bargain.
  • Ordering in two goes, and getting two batches.
  • Rounding 6.02 down. It's 7.

Measure the perimeter, multiply by the wall height, take off 21 per door and 15 per window, then divide by the yield that matches your paper's repeat — not the number on the label. Round up, order the whole lot in one batch, and keep the spare. The leftover roll costs you one bolt; not having it costs you the wall.
